With 60 years of experience as a civil engineer and an engineering professor behind him, Dr. Wright is currently retired, having most recently worked at the University of Maryland at College park as a research professor of civil and environmental engineering between 2004 and 2017. Previously, he excelled as a civil engineering educator at the University of Illinois from 1957 to 1974. In addition to these appointments, he served the United States Bureau of Standards as the chief of structures in the building research division, the Center for Technology Building as the deputy director and the director, and the National Research Council as the chairman of the board of infrastructure and constructed environments. Dr. Wright began his career as a junior engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1953.
A former director of the Building and Fire Research Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Dr. Wright was active for several years as the director of sustainable infrastructure for the International Council for Building Research. He was also involved with the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction as the director of practice, education, research and studies and documentation, and as the president. Furthermore, Dr. Wright formerly held the position of the president of the liaison committee of International Civil Engineering Organizations.
An honorary and distinguished member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Dr. Wright has maintained involvement with the organization as the vice chairman since 2012, having previously held the roles of the chairman of the organization's committee on adaptation to a changing climate, a member of the infrastructure resilience division, a member of the committee on sustainability and the chairman of the sustainable infrastructure education subcommittee. Elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he found success as the secretary of the civil engineering section of the National Academy of Engineering. Additionally, Dr. Wright contributed to his community through the Montgomery Village Foundation, having held the posts of president from 1989 to 1990 and from 2001 to 2003 and a member of the board of directors from 1985 to 2012.
Attributing his success to working on what he found to be most important and enjoyable, Dr. Wright also credits his exemplary industry efforts to his fellow colleagues, mentors and family. Honored many times for his work, he was presented with a President's Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2010, International Award from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 2003, the Henry L. Michel Award from the Civil Engineering Research Foundation in 1999, and a Gold Medal from the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1982. Recognized as the Federal Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1988, Dr. Wright has been featured in more than 60 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the East.
Dr. Wright earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in civil engineering at Syracuse University in 1953 and 1955, respectively. He later graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering from the University of Illinois in 1962. Registered as professional engineer in New York and a structural engineer in Illinois, Dr. Wright notably completed two years of service in the U.S. Army between 1955 and 1957.
