BAYSIDE, CA, March 26, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Hartwell H. Welsh Jr., Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Welsh celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Welsh is a retired research wildlife ecologist who was employed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Research, Pacific Southwest Research Station at the Redwood Sciences Laboratory in Arcata, CA, for 31 years between 1984 and 2015. In his role, he specialized in herpetology, which is the branch of zoology concerned with the study of amphibians and reptiles. Prior to his tenure at the department, he spent one year as a field biologist at the University of California during 1983 and held various related positions at the National Ecology Laboratory between 1981 and 1984. During his tenure at the Redwood Sciences Lab he was also an adjunct professor in the Wildlife Department at Humboldt State University where he mentored many graduate students.
Throughout his career, Dr. Welsh contributed more than 90 scientific papers and conference proceedings to domestic and international scientific journals. He also authored two books in his field. He was very active with a number of professional organizations, including the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles, the Herpetologists League, the Society of Conservation Biology, the Society of Northwest Vertebrate Biologists, and the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. Locally, Dr. Welsh is an active member and former board member of the Mattole Restoration Council in Petrolia, CA.
Recently, Dr. Welsh was the recipient of a Notable Career Achievement Award by the Society of Northwest Vertebrate Biologists in 2015. He also received a Special Recognition Award from the U.S. Partners for Reptile and Amphibian Conservation that same year. He has been showcased in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America.
Making the decision to study the life sciences was heavily influenced by Dr. Welsh's father, who was an entomologist. Taking his son with him to work and visiting various farms, Dr. Welsh became intrigued by his father's work. He also developed an affinity for reptiles. After high school, Dr. Welsh served three years in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966 as a pharmacy specialist in California, Texas, South Carolina and Germany. He later earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972, followed by a Master of Science from Humboldt State University in 1976 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1993. While pursuing his master's degree, Dr. Welsh worked at the Sierra San Pedro Mártir National Park in the Mexican state of Baja California. One evening, while watching the sun set on a large boulder, a chukar partridge climbed up and sat beside him, a Eurasian upland gamebird in the pheasant family, which was such a rarity.
Married to Dr. Sharyn Beth Marks for 20 years, Dr. Welsh is the father of one daughter. In his retirement, when he isn't busy spending quality time with his family, he enjoys traveling and studying nature.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Hartwell H. Welsh Jr., Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
