Dr. Cummings is a retired nuclear engineer who was employed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, until 1997. Serving in a number of capacities during his tenure, including leader of the nuclear systems safety program, chief of operations of the Livermore Pool Type Reactor, and head of the engineering mechanical section, he spent the last eight years as the assistant to the deputy director of operations. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which is primarily funded by the United States Department of Energy, is a premier research and development institution for science and technology applied to national security.
During his career, Dr. Cummings had the opportunity to work on a risk assessment for nuclear power safety (WASH 1400) while in Washington, D.C., which was a major career highlight for him. In addition, he spent time helping licensing nuclear power plants. He was also a member of the SP-100 safety advisory committee between 1983 and 1992.
An elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Cummings is also a member and former chairman of the Northern California section of the American Nuclear Society. Locally, he has served on the advisory committee for DeMolay International in Walnut Creek, California. DeMolay International is a youth leadership organization dedicated to making young men better people and leaders. Dr. Cummings also served as a committee chairman for the Boy Scouts of America in Danville, California.
Deciding in high school that he wanted to pursue a career in engineering, Dr. Cummings went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1956, followed by a Master of Science in nuclear engineering in 1959 at the University of California, Berkeley. He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering at the University of California, Davis in 1978. Dr. Cummings is a registered professional engineer in the state of California.
