Representing clients for more than 55 years, Mr. Rosen concentrates his practice on constitutional and civil rights law, employment law, consumer law, complex commercial litigation and litigation involving attorneys, including malpractice, law firm formation and withdrawal issues, and claims for attorneys' fees. He is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer, arbitrator, mediator, court ADR panelist. He is also testifying expert on attorneys' fees and related matters. Some of his greatest achievements memories included representing the victims of the Kent State University Shootings in May 1970, being involved in some of the most cutting-edge class action lawsuits in the country and arguing five times before the Supreme Court.
Mr. Rosen formerly served as partner of Rosen & Phillips from 1986 to 1989, was the principal of the Law Offices of Sanford Jay Rosen from 1982 to 1986, and was a partner of both Rosen & Remcho from 1980 to 1982 and Rosen, Remcho & Henderson from 1976 to 1980. During his career, he also served as a legal director for the Mexican-American Legal Defense Fund and assistant legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union, taught law at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Maryland, and was the first associate director for the Council on Legal Education Opportunity.
Involved with numerous committees and organizations over the years, Mr. Rosen is currently a longtime early neutral evaluator and mediator for the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California. He is also a permanent attorney delegate emeritus of the Judicial Conference of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and former attorney delegate to the Judicial Conference of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Mr. Rosen is a longstanding member of the American Bar Association, the American Association of Justice, the California Bar Association and the Bar Association of San Francisco. He has also contributed more than 50 articles to various professional and political journals in his area of expertise and has contributed to such news media as the Huffington Post.
Mr. Rosen has been named to Northern California Super Lawyers every year since 2004 and the Best Lawyers list for appellate practice every year since 2013. He received the Diversity Pioneer Award from the Council on Legal Education Opportunity in 2008 for his contribution to its mission of increasing minority representation in legal education and the profession. In 2018 he received the CLEO Edge Founders' Award. The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., The Prisoners Union and the City and County of San Francisco have also recognized him for his work. He has been cited in more than 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in the World.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University in 1959 and Bachelor of Laws from Yale University in 1962, Mr. Rosen was soon after admitted to the Connecticut Bar and later to the California Bar and before the Supreme Court of the United States.
