Richard E. Wainerdi accepted a First Place Presentation Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and Chemical Institute in 1961.

The former president and the chief executive officer of the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Dr. Wainerdi excelled in these roles from 1984 until his retirement in 2013. Under his guidance, the Texas Medical Center experienced exponential growth both in square footage and in the number of staff members, expanding from 31 to 52 institutions. Prior to his years at the Center, Dr. Wainerdi served as the president of Gulf Research and Development Company, a division of the Gulf Oil Corporation, in Houston. He also worked as the senior vice president of 3D/International, the head of the Nuclear Science Center and Texas Engineering Experiment Station at Texas A&M University and a coordinator of nuclear activities at Dresser Industries Inc. Dr. Wainerdi served in the U.S. Air Force between 1952 and 1953 on active duty and 1953 to 1955 in the Air National Guard.
Dr. Wainerdi also has an extensive background in academia. Recruited by Texas A&M University in 1957, he was active as the founder and the head of the Nuclear Science Center. Throughout his 20 years of service at Texas A&M University, Dr. Wainerdi held the positions of a professor of chemical engineering and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.
In 1971, Dr. Wainerdi authored "Modern Methods of Geochemical Analysis." He has since penned numerous articles for a variety of professional journals in his area of expertise. Dr. Wainerdi also held the role of a regional editor of the International Journal of Radioanalytical Chemistry, a contributing editor of Producers Monthly, an associate editor of Radiochemical and Radioanalytical Letters and as an editorial advisory board member of Talanta, A Journal of Analytical Chemistry.
A graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, Dr. Wainerdi attended Oklahoma University, earning a Bachelor of Science in petroleum engineering in 1952. He continued his studies at the Pennsylvania State University, working as a research assistant and a fellow of petroleum engineering while obtaining his Master's degree between 1953 and 1955. He attended the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology from 1955 to 1956, Dr. Wainerdi concluded his academic program at the Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 1958 with a Doctor of Philosophy.
A longtime member of the American Chemical Society and several honor societies, Dr. Wainerdi is the former chairman of the Isotopes and Radiation Division of the American Nuclear Society. He was affiliated with the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry as a member and the former chairman of the commission on analytical radiochemistry. Likewise, Dr. Wainerdi has been featured in more than 15 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
Accepting a First Place Presentation Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and Chemical Institute in 1961, Dr. Wainerdi was presented with a Faculty Distinguished Research Award from Texas A&M University in 1962. He additionally accepted the George Hevesy Medal in 1977, among other accolades. Dr. Wainerdi was also eponymously honored with a local bridge by the City of Houston, TX, the County of Harris, TX, and the Texas Medical Center.
