Dr. Robert Allen is an Emeritus Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Dr. Allen found success as a security scientist with the Oak Ridge Biology Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1962 to 1968. He went on to become senior biologist 1968-1973 in the new life sciences division of ORTEC, an EG&G subsidiary and a leader in the design and manufacture of ionizing radiation detectors, nuclear instrumentation, analysis software and integrated systems. During this period, he was also a guest professor at Heidelberg University in Germany from 1971 to 1972.
He later joined the faculty of The Medical University of South Carolina as associate professor of pathology in 1973 and Chairman of the Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine from 1975 to 1982 and remained as Professor of Pathology until retirement in 1997 with the appointment as Emeritus Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Dr. Allen initially pursued an education at the University of Vermont, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1952. He continued his studies with a Master of Science at the University of Vermont. Following these accomplishments, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1959. Dr. Allen subsequently concluded his academic efforts, completing postdoctoral coursework with the support of the National Institutes of Health at the Jackson Laboratory from 1960 to 1962.
Throughout his career, Dr. Allen has been celebrated for his contributions. He accepted a Doctoral Research Award from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, as well as the Electrophoresis Society Award in recognition of more than a decade of untiring service to society and accomplishments in the field. Likewise, Dr. Allen has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
