With more than 40 years of professional experience, Ms. Tungate most recently served as a circuit judge for the 21st Judicial Circuit from 2002 to 2018, having formerly been an associate judge from 1998 to 2002. Prior to obtaining these illustrious positions, she was a partner with Tungate & Tungate in Watseka, IL, from 1979 to 1998, an assistant public defender of Iroquois County in Illinois from 1978 to 1982 and again from 1988 to 1996, and a sole practitioner in private practice from 1976 to 1979. Alongside her primary career endeavors, she served as an adjunct professor at Kankakee Community College and Special Prosecutor for the State Attorney of Iroquois County.
Hailing from a family of lawyers, Ms. Tungate began her career as a student at Illinois Wesleyan University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1970. She subsequently completed postgraduate coursework with the John Marshall Law School and Loyola University New Orleans, where she earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1975. Ms. Tungate has been admitted to practice law in the states of Louisiana and Illinois, as well as before the United States Supreme Court.
A respected voice in her industry, Ms. Tungate has been active with a number of professional organizations. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Bar Association, the American Judges Association, the Illinois Judges Association, the Louisiana Bar Association, the Illinois Public Defender Association and the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association. The former president of the Illinois Federation of Business and Professional Women, she has also served as vice president of the Iroquois County Bar Association. Ms. Tungate has additionally been affiliated with the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois Bar Association, the Society of Women in Law and Phi Kappa Delta.
Throughout her career, Ms. Tungate has received awards and accolades for her achievements. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including the fourth and fifth editions of Who's Who in American Law and the 15th edition of Who's Who of American Women, published in 1986.
