After accruing 25 years of professional excellence in linguistics education, Dr. Engber retired from her role as an associate professor of linguistics at Truman State University in Kirksville, MO, in 2004, where she started in 1993. Upon retirement, she began lending her time and expertise to the Bloomington Rotary Club in Indiana as an administrative assistant from 2005 to 2008. Earlier in her career, she gained valuable expertise through Anderson University as an instructor of Spanish and Indiana University Bloomington as an associate instructor of the intensive English program, administrative assistant for the committee for research and development, and instructor of the semi-intensive English program.
During her academic career, she was a member of the Linguistics Society of America, Teachers of English as a Second Language, the American Association for Applied Linguistics, and she is currently a member of the Indiana Historical Society. She is a lifetime member of the Indiana University Alumni Association. Dr. Engber holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, with honors, from Indiana University Bloomington, a Master of Arts in Spanish and a Master of Arts in teaching English as a second language from Ball State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in linguistics from Indiana University Bloomington.
Utilizing her knowledge of the field, she contributed to "Understanding English: A Listening Approach to English as a Second Language" in 1983 and has penned multiple articles to professional journals. In her spare time, Dr. Engber contributes to her community as a Volunteer Coordinator for Meals on Wheels and a docent for the Mathers Museum of World Cultures. She is a member of the First Christian Church, where she has served as a deacon and elder. She is also an advanced master gardener.
For her professional achievements, Dr. Engber received a grant from Truman State University and a fellowship from Indiana University Bloomington, and she was featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
