Mr. Li recently retired as Vice President, Operations from Tetra Tech Inc., a global engineering and environmental consulting firm with revenues exceeding $3 billion. He was responsible for the firm's Golden, Colorado mining practice, where he grew sales by over 66% during his tenure. He now serves as a principal advisor to FGM Mining Consultants of Littleton, CO. Prior to joining Tetra Tech, he served Director of Business Development for Washington Group International (now AECOM)). In this assignment, he led efforts for the successful procurement over $450 million in sales. In recognition of his performance, he was presented five Corporate Lion Awards and an Eagle Award for sales/marketing excellence, including two New Business of the Year projects in Nevada and Bolivia.
Between 1997 and 1995, Mr. Li has excelled as the chief operating officer and the vice president of corporate development at Behre Dolbear and Company, Inc. One of the oldest mineral industry advisory firms in the world, the company specializes in performing impartial technical and strategic studies for mining companies, financial institutions, governments and international agencies. Major projects covered nations including Venezuela, Argentina, Nigeria and Ethiopia.
Always interested in the field of engineering, Mr. Li began his career as a production supervisor for Kennecott Copper Corporation in Bingham Canyon, Utah. He then served as an associate editor for the Engineering and Mining Journal in New York City and the editor-in-chief for the Mining Engineering Magazine in Colorado. During his tenure, he chaired a Mining and Exploration Symposium and Trade Mission for the U.S. Department of Commerce to the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. Getting back into the field, Mr. Li held the positions of a senior mining engineer for Golder Associates in Golden, CO. and the director of business development for Thyssen Mining Construction in Wheat Ridge, CO.
Mr. Li later maintained involvement in mining management, serving as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Pincock, Allen and Holt, Inc. in Lakewood, CO. Active several other companies over the next near decade, he eventually accepted the role of the vice president of operations for Tetra Tech Inc. in 2011. Attending numerous conferences throughout his career as well, he was appointed as a U.S. representative to the International Organizing Committee (IOC) of the World Mining Congress. World Mining Congresses were held in Turkey, Canada, Brazil , Kazakhstan, and Australia.
Mr. Li authored and/or edited several publications, including "Mineral Resources of the Pacific Rim" in 1982, followed by "Mineral Resource Management by Personal Computer" in 1987, "Small Mines Development in Precious Metals" in 1987 and "Risk Management/Assessment in Mining" in 1992. Volunteering his time with the Denver Art Museum since 2011, he formerly contributed as an organizer and the director for the Salt Lake Chinese for Community Action. One of the highlights of Mr. Li's career was the opportunity to meet and chat with the former president of Peru, Alejandro Toledo. In 1982, he was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel, by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Elected as an honorary member of the 200,000 member American Institute of Mining Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), Mr. Li is currently serving as its Treasurer. He is also a member of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America. A longtime member of the Colorado Mining Association, he was elected as the chairman of the board in 1995-96. He has been affiliated with the American Exploration and Mining Association (formerly Northwest Mining Association) serving as a Trustee and president in 1986. The organization elected Mr. Li as a life member in 1992. Mr. Li is a 50-year Legion of Honor member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. A distinguished member of SME, he was elected president of the 27,000 member society in 2001. A crowning achievement during his career was his role as a founder of the Denver Gold Group, the world's premier association for global precious metals producers with annual meetings in Denver, Colorado and Zurich, Switzerland. He served two terms as president and is a 22 year member of its Board of Directors.(1989 to 2011).
Honored with multiple awards, Mr. Li was presented with a St. Barbara's Award from the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, the Denver Gold Group and the Colorado Mining Association in 2016. He also was recognized by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado section in 2010 and the President's Award in 2002, among others. During his tenure as President, he signed technical cooperation agreements with Venezuela and China. He is now a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame and serves on its Board of Governors. Mr. Li notably earned a Bachelor of Science in mining engineering at Columbia University in 1970. At graduation, he received the coveted Charles Kandel Medal, presented by its Alumni Association.
