Dr. Ruey Jane Ryburn (Ne' Jane Starn) graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing from San Diego State University in 1968. She worked for several years as a public health nurse in North Carolina and staff nurse in California, the last two years at Stanford Medical Center. Upon moving to Hawaii, Ruey achieved double master's degrees in public health and nursing, both with foci in maternal child health. She then began her teaching career at the University of Hawaii, School of Nursing. She also obtained a DrPH (Doctorate in Public Health) and eventual promotion to full professor. Dr. Ryburn was professionally affiliated with the American Nurses Association, The American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners.
For her outstanding achievements in nursing and education, Dr. Ryburn was recognized as the Maternal Child Health Nurse of the Year by the Oahu chapter of March of Dimes and the Excellence in Nursing Practice from the Hawaii Nursing Association. Having accepted the Kupono Award from Sigma Theta Tau, she has been featured in professional publications such as Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in American Nursing.
While still a Professor of Nursing, Dr. Ryburn became interested in holistic or integrative health care practices. She attended the four-year program designed for working professionals at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, completing a diploma in Brennan Healing Science in 1998. Dr. Ryburn retired from the University of Hawaii in 2000 as a Professor Emerita, and founded a three year energy healing school in Honolulu (www.sacredpathhealing.com) which has graduated over 100 students. Dr. Ryburn maintains a private energy healing practice. She also continues membership in American Holistic Nurses' Association and became Advanced Holistic Nursing-Board Certified.
