Driven by a passion to help others, Mr. Kshepakaran has been a highly regarded occupational therapist for over four decades. He began his career in India in 1960 as an occupational therapist for the IPD Orthopaedic Center in Chennai. He remained in this role for two years before coming to the United States to take on a role at the New Jersey Orthopedic Hospital in Orange, New Jersey. In his career, Mr. Kshepakaran has been highlighted for his professional excellence by prominent organizations such as the American Occupational Therapy Association, who honored him with its coveted fellow distinction.
Mr. Kshepakaran has also been the recipient of numerous achievement and service awards from the American Occupational Therapy Association and the Asian/Pacific Heritage Occupational Therapy Association. His memorable roles have included chief of therapeutic activities for D.C. Village in Washington, D.C., chief occupational therapist for Bon-Hooghly Hospitals in India, occupational therapist for the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital in New York City, and superintendent for the Home for Handicapped Children in India. Mr. Kshepakaran previously served as a member of the advisory board for home health care facilities in Chicago, a member of the licensure board for the state of Maryland, a member of the Roster of Accreditation Evaluations, a member of the American Occupational Therapy Certification Board and member of the MDI Network Group.
In 1971, Mr. Kshepakaran transitioned from a hands-on occupational therapist role to an educational role as he wanted to inspire and prepare the next generation of occupational therapists for their careers. He was an instructor for the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, for five years, before taking on assistant professor roles with the University of Wisconsin System in Madison and the University of Illinois. He took on the role of professor and chair of the occupational therapy program at Chicago State University in 1989 and remained in this role until 2001. When asked of the highlight of his career, Mr. Kshepakaran notes that he is very proud of helping students from under-represented groups to graduate. He feels gratified by helping people do better for themselves and others.
Prior to embarking on his career, Mr. Kshepakaran earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Kerala in India in 1958, a diploma in occupational therapy from Occupational Therapy School and Center, Government Medical College and Hospital, Ajni, Nagpur (Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University) in 1960 and a Master of Education from the University of Puget Sound in 1975. He also completed postgraduate coursework at the University of Maryland in 1992. A certified occupational therapist, Mr. Kshepakaran holds a certified aging in place specialist designation.
