Since 1976, he has been instructing students at the higher education level in the areas of business and economics. He gained early recognition as an emerging leader in his field while pursuing early roles, including assistant professor and faculty associate for the Center for Urban Affairs at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, and professor of economics and business at California State University, Irvine. Subsequent to these two roles, Dr. Medoff joined the faculty at California State University, Long Beach, where he has been serving as a professor of economics and business since 1979.
Credited with improving curriculum standards and encouraging students each year to be their best selves, Dr. Medoff is known for taking on new projects that allow him to share his joy of teaching further. For three years, he served as the associate chair for the economics department at California State University, Long Beach. He also has been a visiting professor at his former employer, California State University, Irvine. Dr. Medoff has additionally been an associate editor for "Contemporary Policy Issues," having previously contributed articles to professional journals regarding sports, race and sex discrimination.
To prepare for a career in the academic field, Dr. Medoff first pursued and completed his own education. He achieved a Bachelor of Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1967 and a Master of Science from the University of Illinois in 1969. He later went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in applied economics and statistics from the University of California, Berkeley. In light of his many achievements, he received a Scholarly Achievement Award, an Exceptional Merit Service Award and an Exceptional Teaching Award, alongside features in the 27th and 28th editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
Dr. Medoff reflects on his four-decade career with immense pride due to his myriad accomplishments. In particular, he notes that the highlight of his career has always been, and will always be, watching his students succeed. Dr. Medoff continues to be incredibly involved in his professional community. He is a member of the American Economic Association, the Southern Economic Association, Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Gamma Sigma. He also served on the Task Force for Streets in San Jose, CA, in 1978.
