Dr. Deicken, a neuropsychiatrist who has spent his entire career working and teaching in the state of California began his professional journey completing a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree at Stanford University. Four year later, after earning an MD at the University of California, San Francisco, he entered the fields of healthcare and education as a resident physician at the University of California, San Francisco for four years, followed by a 3 year VA Biological Psychiatry research fellowship utilizing in vivo phosphorus and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging techniques to study the human brain in neuropsychiatric disorders Dr. Deicken was then awarded a VA Career Development Award for 4 years to continue his neuroimaging research.
In 1992 and 1994, Dr. Deicken's research was selected by the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression for their Young Investigator Awards; and in 2000 and 2004, for their Independent Investigator Research Awards. The Stanley Foundation also selected Dr. Deicken's investigative work for research awards m 1996 and 1998 Dr. Deicken has published numerous peer reviewed neuroimagmg articles and scientific abstracts in leading clinical neuroscience journals and for national and international conferences.
Throughout his career, he worked as a staff physician and research scientist at the San Francisco VA Medical Center for 20 years, and also served as the medical director of the Partial Hospital Program there. The remainder of his time was spent in clinical teaching of medical students and psychiatry residents at the University of California, San Francisco where he achieved full Professor in Residence in the Department of Psychiatry He also continues to peer review manuscripts for journals m his field, and has served on the editorial advisory board for the Journal of Integrative Neuroscience.
A diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Deicken is a licensed physician through the Medical Board of California. A fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (UK), Collegium International Neuro-psychopharacologicum, and the International Society for Affective Disorders, Dr. Deicken is also a member of the American Medical Association, New York Academy of Sciences, Society for Neuroscience, Society of Biological Psychiatry, and the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
