For 20 years, Dr. Davila excelled as a literature and language educator who taught in the foreign languages department at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Maintaining the role of the chair of the department from 1990 to 1994 and from 2007 to 2010, she also served at SUNY New Paltz as the director of Latin American studies from 1991 to 2010 and a full professor from 1999 to 2010. During her tenure, Dr. Davila was one of the founding members of the Latin American Studies Program on campus.
Prior to being taken on board at SUNY, Dr. Davila found success as a teacher at the Defense Language Institute in California, West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas and the University of California at Santa Barbara. She also spent several years working in her home country of Columbia as a researcher at the Institute Colombiano de Pedagogia in 1970. Dr. Davila began her career as an assistant professor at the University of Valle from 1968 to 1973.
For the past near 20 years, Dr. Davila has contributed as a project director for the title VI grant for undergraduate students of the international and foreign language program through the United States Department of Education. Since retiring, she has also been active as a private teacher of English as a second language in 2013. She previously held the post of the academy director of the Spanish Immersion Institute Board of Education and Office of Mental Health in New York City and Albany. Dr. Davila has also provided her skills and resources as a reader for the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, N.J., a reader and evaluator for the New Jersey Department of Higher Education in Princeton and a visiting lecturer at the University of California in Santa Cruz, among other roles.
Dr. Davila is a longstanding member of the Modern Language Association, the Latin-American Studies Association, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and Sigma Delta Pi. She also received a grant from the department of education where she earned the opportunity to travel to Brazil and Cuba with her students, which was a great experience. Prior to embarking upon her professional path, Dr. Davila earned a Bachelor of Arts in linguistics and foreign languages from the National Pedagogic University in 1966, a Master of Arts in Spanish literature from University of the Pacific in California in 1972 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic languages and literature from the University of California in 1983.
Honored with a Distinguished Teacher Award by the SUNY Alumni Association in 1996, Dr. Davila also accepted an Achievement Award from Sigma Delta Pi. Recognized as a scholar through the Latin-American Scholarship Program at American University, she has notably been featured in approximately 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. In her free time, Dr. Davila enjoys reading and writing poetry, some of which has been published, as well as creative writing.
