Since 1998, Dr. Berry has excelled as an English teacher at the South Salem High School in Salem, Ore. Over the past two decades, he has also been active as a literacy leader, an instructional coordinator and an instructor coach. In addition to teaching, Dr. Berry has worked as an advisor for the high school's National Honor Society since 2000.
Prior to his tenure at the high school, Dr. Berry taught as an English instructor at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore. between 1994 and 1998. He also taught English and drama at Ontario High School from 1989 to 1998 and language arts at Ontario Junior High School from 1986 to 1989. Dr. Berry further serves as an adjunct English and writing instructor at Chemeketa Community College in Salem.
Authoring several books in his field, Dr. Berry most recently published "Stronger Writing Skills for Teens: Modes, Methods and Martials That Work" in 2018. He also penned "Cultivating Adolescent Literacy: Standards, Strategies and Performance Tasks for Improving Reading and Writing" in 2017 and "Literacy for Learning: A Handbook of Content Area Strategies for Middle and High School Teachers" in 2014, published by Rowman & Littlefield. The former secretary of the Ontario Oregon Education Association and a current building representative of the Salem-Keizer Education Association, Dr. Berry is also affiliated with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the International Reading Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Education Association and the Oregon Education Association.
Through his community, Dr. Berry was a longtime member of the Malheur Citizens for Democracy in Ontario since 1992. He previously contributed to the Governor's Summit on Hate-Free Oregon during 1993 and as a precinct committeeman with the Oregon Democratic Party in Malheur County during 1998. A Crystal Apple Award nominee in 2003, he was also nominated for the Oregon Teacher of the Year Award in 2016 and 2018. Dr. Berry has notably been included in the seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education and the 27th edition of Who's Who in the West.
Dr. Berry obtained a Bachelor of Arts in secondary education and English in 1986 and a Master of Science in education in 1990 at Eastern Oregon University. He continued his studies with a Doctor of Education in educational leadership, curriculum and instruction at Portland State University in 2009. A certified teacher in the state of Oregon, Dr. Berry also completed postgraduate coursework at Boise State University and took ongoing courses at Portland State University since 2003.
