In the field, Dr. Cardman was most recently employed with the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, VA, as a deputy associate director of physics (1993-1996), then associate director of physics (1997-2011) and then principal staff scientist (2011-2017). Commonly known as the Jefferson Lab, it is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory. Scientists worldwide utilize the lab's unique particle accelerator, known as the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), to probe the most basic building blocks of matter, helping us better understand these particles and the forces that bind them and, ultimately, our world. Dr. Cardman retired from the facility in 2017 but remains active as an emeritus staff scientist.
While at Jefferson Lab, Dr. Cardman was a Governor's Distinguished Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He officially retired from that position in 2017. Before coming to Jefferson Lab he taught as an assistant, associate and then full professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 1973 to 1995, during which time he was a principal and co-principal investigator on multiple research grants in the Nuclear Physics Laboratory between 1981 and 1991. He also was an adjunct professor at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, between 1993 and 2002 and an instructor of physics at his alma mater, Yale University, from 1971 to 1972. He was a research associate at Yale University during 1972.
Dr. Cardman was a visiting scientist at the Centre D'études Nucléaires Saclay in France during 1980 and 1981. He is an elected fellow of the American Physical Society and a longtime member of Sigma Xi. Throughout his career, Dr. Cardman has contributed over 100 articles to professional journals. He has chaired numerous committees within the division of nuclear physics of the American Physical Society, and chaired and served as a member of various subcommittees of the National Science Foundation/Department of Energy Nuclear Sciences Advisory Committee.
The recipient of a National Academy of Science postdoctoral fellowship from 1972 to 1973, Dr. Cardman has since been honored in the 45th through 69th editions of Who's Who in America, as well as approximately 20 editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Cardman received a Bachelor of Arts in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1972 from Yale University. He soon after served as a National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council postdoctoral fellow with the National Bureau of Standards from 1972 to 1973. Married to his wife Helen-Andrea Cardman, Dr. Cardman has three children and five grandchildren.
