CORVALLIS, OR, April 04, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Frederick Herbert Horne, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Horne celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Leading a wonderful career in academia for 37 years, Dr. Horne retired in 2000 as a professor emeritus of chemistry at Oregon State University in Corvallis. Hired in 1986, he formerly taught and served as dean of the College of Science between 1986 and 1999. Prior to his tenure at Oregon State, Dr. Horne was a 22-year faculty member at Michigan State University in East Lansing, where he taught and served as an associate chair in the chemistry department, was interim manager for performing arts and the associate dean of the College of Natural Science. He also taught chemistry for one year at Stanford University in California between 1963 and 1964, where he was previously a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow from 1962 to 1963.
Dr. Horne has contributed more than 40 articles to various peer-reviewed journals in his area of expertise. For his doctoral dissertation, he covered the topics of thermogravitational thermal diffusion in liquids and non-equilibrium thermal dynamics.
A member and longtime chapter advisor of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society since 1988 and lifetime Sequoyah fellow since 1991, Dr. Horne is also a past president of the Harvard Club of Central Michigan and the former chairman of the pool committee of the University Club. He is currently a longstanding member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society, Sigma Xi and several honor societies. He also served on the board of directors of the Friends of Chamber Music in Corvallis and Oregon State University's Corvallis Symphony.
Born and raised in Missouri, Dr. Horne had a quasi-foster father, Alvin McCoy, who was a reporter for the Kansas City Star who won a Pulitzer Prize for exposing a political bandit for the support of Eisenhower. A chemistry major in college, Mr. McCoy was a science editor for the paper as well. Following his example, Dr. Horne very much looked up to him, and so he majored in chemistry in college as well. He has notably held a Bachelor of Arts from the prestigious Harvard University since 1956 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Kansas since 1962.
Recently a 2018 recipient of a Lifetime Research Achievement Award from Oregon State University College of Science, Dr. Horne was also a Harvard University national scholar between 1952 and 1955, National Science Foundation graduate fellow between 1959 and 1961 and Danforth Foundation associate in 1971.
