With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Guthrie excelled as a professor and associate dean with Rider University from 1965 to 2011. Prior to these positions, he worked as a supervisor of science and mathematics with the New Jersey State Department of Education from 1959 to 1965 and a physics and mathematics teacher with Hopewell Valley Central High School from 1958 to 1959. Dr. Guthrie began his career as a science educator at the Trenton Public School from 1957 to 1958.
Dr. Guthrie has had a life-time interest in and work with Lenape culture and ways to implement it in the required educational curricula for school children in NJ, NY and PA (areas formerly occupied by the Native American Lenape people). He has done this with in-school presentations, sharing his large collection of artifacts and stories in hundreds of schools over a 40-year period of time. He has also documented Lenape foods, hunting techniques, musical instruments and forms of shelter in four commercially produced DVDs by Rue Wildlife Videos, which are used extensively in schools. His Lenape work with schools, college courses and community groups formed the basis for his professor assessment.
Dr. Guthrie pursued an education at Trenton State College, now known as the College of New Jersey, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in science and mathematics education in 1957. He continued his studies with a Master of Arts in physics in 1960, also at Trenton State College. He concluded his academic efforts at New York University in 1975, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy of education. Dr. Guthrie has been certified as a teacher of science and mathematics for K-12 in the state of New Jersey.
A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Guthrie has been an active leader in his community. The former president of the New Jersey Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, he is a member of the New Jersey Science Teachers Association and the American Educational Research Association. Moreover, he has served on the executive committees for the New Jersey Academy of Science and the New Jersey Council of Education. Furthermore, Dr. Guthrie was previously affiliated with Phi Delta Kappa as chapter president and a faculty advisor.
Throughout his career, Dr. Guthrie has been celebrated on many occasions for his exemplary contributions to the field. Notably, he has been presented with the Lindback Award for Teaching from Rider University. Likewise, Dr. Guthrie has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in the East.
