A former teacher and advertising executive, Ms. Hendrix recently established the Connie Hendrix Studio & Gallery in Marble, Colo., in 2004. Having owned a very successful advertising business, Connie Hendrix & Associates, in Memphis, Tenn. between 1979 and 2004, Ms. Hendrix previously excelled as the vice president and owner of Midsouth Graphic Systems between 1980 and 1989, the senior art director for Ward Archer & Associates from 1969 to 1979, and as a secondary education teacher in both Memphis and Dyersburg, Tenn. between 1965 and 1969. She was also an owner and a partner of the successful Madison Avenue Art Gallery in Germantown, Tenn. Prior to teaching she worked in the art department for Look Magazine from 1960 to 1964, where she was the first women hired in their Des Moine office, breaking the glass ceiling.
Throughout her career, Ms. Hendrix also worked as a watercolor instructor for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis's Adult Education Program, the Jewish Community Center, The Studio and in the continued education program at Memphis State University. She served as an advisor to the design arts department at the Memphis College of Art and as an advisor to the computer graphics department at the State Technical Institute in Memphis. Furthermore, Ms. Hendrix found success as a workshop presenter for various events and as a judge for the Loveland Sculpture in the Park in 2010 and 2011, which she considers to be a major honor.
Participating in more than 150 art shows, Ms. Hendrix's very first one-woman art exhibition was held at Originals Only Art Gallery in Germantown, TN in the 1970s. Her artwork was additionally exhibited in one-woman shows at the Askew Nixon Ferguson, Inc. Gallery and the Playhouse on the Square, among other locations, as well as in group shows at the Allied Artists Exhibitions in New York City and the National League of American Pen Women in Washington and Watercolor USA in Springfield, MO. Ms. Hendrix has been represented in various permanent collections, including at the Wallace State Agricultural Building in Des Moines, Iowa, the Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colo. and the National Bank of Commerce in Memphis.
Ms. Hendrix's work was also selected for the Watercolor Group Show in Memphis in memory of Jason Williamson. In addition to her shows and permanent collections, her work has been published in Southwest Art Magazine, American Artist Magazine, Watercolor Magazine, and Positive Living Magazine since 1974. Furthermore, she has been actively involved with numerous professional organizations, including the Southern Watercolor Society, the Memphis Watercolor Group, the Memphis Society of Visual Communications, the Colorado Watercolor Society and the Western Colorado Watercolor Society. Formerly affiliated with the Memphis Advertising Federation, Ms. Hendrix has held the roles of past president for the Tennessee Watercolor Society, the Redstone Art Foundation and the Art Directors Club of Memphis.
Locally, Ms. Hendrix has contributed in various roles to the Memphis Center City Commission, the Mid-South Eye Bank for Sight Restoration, the Downtown YMCA, the Center for Neighborhoods and the Center for Southern Folklore. She was also appointed to the advisory board for the Germantown Art League and the Marble Millsite Park Planning and Development Committee. Born in Mount Ayr, Iowa, Ms. Hendrix pursued an education at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1964.
Notably, Ms. Hendrix was recognized as an Outstanding Citizen in Memphis Downtown and as Citizen of the Year by Marble, Colo. She was later honored as the Most Outstanding Artist in the Redstone Labor Day Art Show and accepted a Center City Commission Downtown Leadership Award. She also received the Citizenship Award when she graduated from high school, which started her citizenry involvemnt. Her proudest moment, however, was when she was presented with a Silver Medal Award for the 7th District by the American Advertising Association for outstanding awards and achievement in the advertising field and participation in outstanding community service. Likewise, Ms. Hendrix has been selected for inclusion in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
