Prior to his retirement in 2011, his academic career spanned 33 years. He was a full-time faculty member in the Louisiana State University Department of Psychology (www.lsu.edu/psychology/) from 1978 to 1999, awarded the title Professor in 1986. He was Director of the LSU Psychological Services Center from 1983 to 1999. In 1999, he joined the faculty of the LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center (www.pbrc.edu) in a full-time capacity where he was named Chief of Health Psychology and in 2003 was named the John Stauffer McIlhenny Endowed Professor of Nutrition. The Pennington Center is the largest academically based nutrition center in the world.
He found much success as an editor and expert reviewer for numerous journals. Likewise, Dr. Williamson has authored many articles for professional publications. Over the course of his academic career, he has published over 300 refereed journal articles, over 60 chapters in edited books, and one book entitled, Assessment of Eating Disorders: Obesity, Anorexia, and Bulimia Nervosa (see curriculum vita or https://www.researchgate.net/scientific-contributions/38975772_Donald_A_Williamson) During his academic career, his research was fully funded from 1999 to 2011 by the National Institutes of Health, US Army, US Department of Agriculture, and many corporate sponsors. Also, he mentored over 75 doctoral candidates, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty. Beginning in 2014, Dr. Williamson became a consultant and a member of the Clinical Advisory Committee for Real Appeal®, a digital/online weight management program that is provided to health plan beneficiaries as a no-cost health benefit (https://realappeal.com). Dr. Williamson began his career as a student at Wofford College, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1973. He subsequently continued his studies at the University of Memphis Department of Psychology (www.memphis.edu/pshchology/), earning a Master of Arts in 1975. He concluded his studies at the University of Memphis in 1978, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. In 1978, he completed a one-year clinical internship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (www.upmc.com/westernsychiatric) which is a part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Williamson was certified as a clinical psychologist by the Louisiana State Board of Examiners of Psychology in 1980.
Throughout his career, Dr. Williamson has received awards and accolades for his achievements. He has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America. Dr. Williamson has additionally been recognized as a Fellow of the Obesity Society.
