Prof. Kobayashi is an award-winning material scientist known for inventing high-resistivity alloy systems, a CAI Impact Testing System and high strength materials. Throughout his career, he has held a number of prominent roles such as the president of Japan Institute of Light Metals, the vice-president and director for Toyohashi University of Technology, an associate professor for Nagoya University, and a researcher for Fuji Electric Corporation. Prof. Kobayashi concluded his career as vice president, where he spent 25 years in a variety of positions for the institution, including as the vice president from 2002 to 2008, a chairman of production systems engineering from 1999 to 2002 and a professor since 1982.
For his incredible work in the field of research, Prof. Kobayashi was presented with a Japan Invention Award from the Japan Invention Society, the Nishyama Memorial Prize from Japan Institute of Iron and Steel, the Lidaka Prize from the Japan Foundrymen's Society, the Tanikawa-Harris Prize from the Japan Institute of Metals and the Top Prize of the Japan Institute of Light Metals, where he is an honorary member. He has remained at the top of his field through his affiliation with the ASM, for which he is distinguished as a fellow. When asked of his success, Prof. Kobayashi credits his passion for the way things work, which began in his childhood.
To prepare for a career in his field, Prof Kobayashi attended Hokkaido University, where he initially earned a Bachelor in Engineering in 1962. He later obtained a Doctor in Engineering from the same esteemed academic institute in 1972. Prof. Kobayashi is also registered as a professional engineer.
