Retiring in 2004 after nearly 50 years in his field, Dr. Beaufait was an engineer, educator and administrator who worked in several locations across the country, as well as abroad. Spending the last five years of his career at New York City College of Technology at City University of New York as president between 1999 and 2004, he also served on the campuses of Wayne State University in Detroit as dean of the College of Engineering, and West Virginia University, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Liverpool in England teaching various civil engineering courses. He also spent time as the director for the National Science Foundation Greenfield Engineering Education Coalition. Prior to teaching, Dr. Beaufait worked as an engineer for L.E. Gregg & Associates in Lexington, KY, from 1959 to 1960 and as a structural engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, MS, from 1958 to 1959.
Dr. Beaufait has contributed more than 40 articles to various engineering journals. He also co-authored "Computer Methods of Structural Analysis" in 1970 and authored "Basic Concepts in Structural Analysis" in 1977. Early in his career, Dr. Beaufait earned the opportunity to teach as a visiting professor of civil and structural engineering at the University of Wales in Cardiff. He served as a member of the Engineering Accreditation Commission and the Engineering Manpower Commission, and was on the board of directors of the Ford Motor Design Institute. Dr. Beaufait was a consultant in his field for many years as well.
Dr. Beaufait is a longtime member of multiple professional societies, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Engineering Society of Detroit. He served in a number of capacities with the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers, including board of directors member, serving a term as vice-chair, and a term as chair of the Detroit Chapter of MSPE. Furthermore, he is past chair of the Civil Engineering Division of the American Society of Engineering Education and former member of the board of governance of the Order of Engineers.
Active in the Lewes community of Delaware, Dr. has been the deputy mayor since 2015 and a member of the city council since 2011. Affiliated with the Lewes Presbyterian Church since 2006, he was an elder, co-chair of the sanctuary restoration committee and session clerk. He has worked with several other churches in the past as well, including the Southminster Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN, and the First Presbyterian Church in Morgantown, WV. He was on the board of directors of the Independence Community Bank Foundation in Brooklyn, NY, and was a member of the citizens advisory committee for the Metropolitan School System in Nashville.
Honored with multiple recognitions over the years, Dr. Beaufait was more recently named to the Academy of Distinguished Alumni in the department of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2004. He previously received a Gold Award from the Engineering Society of Detroit in 1997, was named Outstanding Engineer in Education by the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers in 1994, and was named Outstanding Volunteer of the Year by the Michigan Center for High Technology in 1991, among other awards. He was honored by the Université d'Evry/Val d'Essonne of the University of Paris with the French award Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques in 2002. He has been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Beaufait notably earned a Bachelor of Science from Mississippi State University in 1958, Master of Science from the University of Kentucky in 1961, and Doctor of Philosophy from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1965.
Married to Lois Erdman since November 1964, they have two children and two grandchildren. In retirement, he loves to read and paint.
