John D'Amico is a retired judge who is currently the chair of the board of trustees of the New York/New Jersey Baykeeper since 2013.
OCEANPORT, NJ, April 08, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present John D'Amico with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. D'Amico celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. D'Amico is a retired judge who is currently the chair of the board of trustees of the New York/New Jersey Baykeeper since 2013, a non-profit environmental organization whose mission is to preserve, protect and restore the Hudson-Raritan Estuary. During his 40-year legal career, he represented Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company as an attorney, counsel and second vice president, Shea & Gould as of counsel, the Superior Court of New Jersey as a judge and the New Jersey State Parole Board as chair. Mr. D'Amico also served the Borough of Oceanport, NJ, as a council member and council president between 1979 and 1984, served two terms as a Monmouth County Freeholder between 1984 and 1988 and again from 2008 and 2010, and was a New Jersey state senator between 1988 and 1989.
While serving as a judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey in the civil division in Monmouth County, Mr. D'Amico developed a new, streamlined trial procedure called an "expedited jury trial," saving litigants time and money by speeding up jury selection, setting time limits for opening and closing arguments, limiting the number of live witnesses, and substituting documents, depositions and expert reports obtained in discovery for live testimony. Expedited jury trials have since been used extensively statewide and have been emulated in other states. Years later, as chairman of the New Jersey State Parole Board, Mr. D'Amico was responsible for reducing the number of parole revocations for technical violations and expanding residential and day reporting programs to address problems such as substance abuse and mental illness. He also established a Community Partnership unit to work with faith-based entities and non-profit agencies to promote successful reintegration of offenders in society. Furthermore, during his 13 years in public service, specifically as a state senator, Mr. D'Amico sponsored several key bills in the areas of transportation and the environment, including a Green Acres bond issue and the Clean Water Enforcement Act.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Mr. D'Amico founded and chaired the Irate Shore Commuters and Shore Commuter Coalition. During his stay, he spearheaded many needed reforms and served on several committees regarding the improvement of public transportation, which played a significant role in the formation of New Jersey Transit. Mr. D'Amico is a longtime member of the New Jersey Bar Association, the Monmouth County Bar Association and the Harvard University Law School Association. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Friends of the Monmouth County Parks. Locally, he served in numerous capacities over a 30-year period. He more recently served as a freeholder for Monmouth County from 2007 to 2010. He formerly served in the same role between 1983 and 1988. He was also the first vice chair of the New Jersey Transportation Coordinating Council in Newark, NJ, from 1984 to 1989, among other roles.
Contributing several articles to peer-reviewed journals, Mr. D'Amico has authored "Saving Former Prisoners" in the Journal of the Correctional Ministries and Chaplains Association in 2013, "Ask and You Will Receive: Creating Faith-Based Programs for Former Inmates" in Corrections Today in 2007, and "Expedited Jury Trials: A Useful Option" in the New Jersey Law Journal in 1997.
Honored with more than a dozen awards throughout his career, Mr. D'Amico recently received a New Jersey Law Journal Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He was also honored with a Government Partnership Award from the Monmouth County Workforce Investment Board in 2011, Outstanding Parole Board Leadership Award from The Kintock Group in 2004, and several proclamations from The Monmouth County Board of Freeholders. Proclaiming "John D'Amico Day" on two separate occasions for dedicated community service, he has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Born in Long Branch, NJ, and raised on the Jersey Shore, Mr. D'Amico's father was an immigrant who desired to become an attorney, but did not have the means to do so. Instilling in his son the importance of helping others, Mr. D'Amico lived out his father's dream. Received his high school diploma at Red Bank Regional High School, he then received a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1963 and Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1966 from Harvard University and was admitted to the New Jersey State Bar. Mr. D'Amico was also named to the Red Bank Regional High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, John D'Amico has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
