Enjoying a very rewarding career in journalism, Ms. Nance initially worked as a reporter for United Press International in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Then she worked as state house correspondent for the Casper (WY) Star- Tribune at the capitol in Cheyenne. When the legislature session ended, she moved to Casper where she covered courts, law enforcement, city and county government, schools and general assignment. After moving to Denver, she excelled as a public relations manager for Mountain Bell, a.k.a. US WEST Communications, Inc. from 1973 to 1996. The last 15 years, she worked as the communications counsellor to departmental vice presidents — Human Resources, Labor Relations, Carrier Services, Capacity Provisioning, Service Assurance, Switched Services, Information Technologies, as well as PR Manager for the US West Corporate Communications subsidiary. After an early retirement and earning a master's degree, Ms. Nance held the position of an adjunct faculty member at Regis University in Denver from 2000 to 2010 and at Metropolitan State College of Denver from 2003 to 2004. Following these appointments, Ms. Nance found success as the managing editor of publications for American Water Works Association from 2005 to 2011. She also was a freelance writer as Vice President of the consulting firm, The Speaker's Counsel, Inc.
Additionally, she was appointed to a term on the Wheat Ridge Cultural Commission between 2015 and 2018, an organization created to promote cultural arts in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, and foster cultural enrichment and education opportunities for the community. Throughout the years, Ms. Nance has performed with the Arvada Center Chorale, Colorado Repertory Singers, the Rhythm of Life Community Chorus, the Lutheran Chorale, the Wheat Ridge Community Chorale, the Pueblo Symphony Chorus, the Sweet Adelines and Casper community theater.
Ms. Nance is very active as a member and the former and current president of Colorado Press Women, an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women. She is also a longtime member of the Society of Professional Journalists and past president of the Colorado chapter. She also has been a member of the Public Relations Society of America. Furthermore, she was the first elected president of Mountain Bell Women in Management, an employee resource group she helped found, where she advocated against workplace harassment in Fortune 500 companies. She also was a member of the steering committee of Colorado Women Forward, a consortium of organizations that lobbied the Colorado Legislature to restore the Colorado Commission on the Status of Women. Her involvement with organizations that fight for women's rights date to encounters with sexism in her early career, including from a publisher who sought to have her dismissed from a wire service to which he subscribed. In her journalism, public relations and teaching careers, she has always sought to be a "fighter for truth and honesty."
Ms. Nance has accepted numerous state and national awards from the National Federation of Press Women Communication Contest, including first place wins for public relations campaigns, web writing and audiovisuals-original videotape. She was also honored among the Women of Achievement by the YWCA in 1982, received two Gold Pick Awards from the Colorado Public Relations Society of America in 1985 and 1990. In 2005 she was honored to be chosen the Colorado Press Women's Communicator of Achievement. Likewise, Ms. Nance has been featured in the 23rd and 24th editions of Who's Who in the West.
While in college, Ms. Nance landed a summer internship at a local newspaper, despite her intention to major in advertising. That summer led to a decision that she would rather write about people than products. She was graduated from the University of Colorado in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism-News/Editorial (with Kappa Tau Alpha honors), followed by a Master of Arts in Language and Communication at Regis University in 1999 (with honors). Ms. Nance also earned an Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) from the Public Relations Society of America in 1996.
