Dr. David R. Segal has been a professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Maryland since 2015.

Dr. Segal has been a professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Maryland since 2015. First appointed in 1975, he taught at the College Park campus for 40 years. During his tenure, he served as the director of the Center for Research on Military Organization (CRMO) from 1995 to 2013. The CRMO, which was established within the university's department of sociology, has been responsible for carrying out a variety of research, teaching and outreach activities. Prior to his joining the University of Maryland, Dr. Segal was a technical area chief for the U.S. Army Research Institute in Arlington, VA, from 1973 to 1975 and was an assistant and associate professor at the University of Michigan from 1966 to 1975. He was also a visiting research fellow at the University of Bonn in Germany in 1971 and a visiting professor at the University of Surrey in 1985. He has lectured at Johns Hopkins University, Rice University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Syracuse University, Temple University, Texas A&M University, the University of Chicago, the University of Minnesota, the University of North Carolina, the University of Texas, and Yale University.
During his academic career, Dr. Segal was a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, from 1981 to 1984, a distinguished visiting professor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York from 1988 to 1989, and a guest scientist at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research from 1982 to 1990. He has spoken at the Sergeants Major Academy, the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, the Royal Canadian Military College, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the French Military Academy, the South Korean Military Academy, the Chilean Naval Academy, the Armed Forces Staff College, the Army Command and General Staff College, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, the NATO Defense College, the National War College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the Naval War College, the Italian Army War College, and the Turkish Army War College.
Dr. Segal has been asked numerous times to testify before Congress and worked with the White House under President Barack Obama's administration to establish a program for military veterans called "Joining Forces." In the mid-1990s, he served as a special assistant to the chief of staff of the U.S. Army, where he explored the use of reserve personnel for peacekeeping purposes. Furthermore, Dr. Segal was a member of the Defense Science Board's task force on human resources strategy in Washington, DC, was on the board of visitors of the U.S. Army War College, is a local board member of the Selective Service and is a member of the U.S. Army Educational Advisory Board.
Throughout his career, Dr. Segal has authored and co-authored over 150 articles in various scholarly journals. He is the co-author of several books, including "The All-Volunteer Force" in 1977, "Recruiting for Uncle Sam" in 1989, "Peace Keepers and Their Wives" in 1993 and "The Postmodern Military" in 2000. An elected fellow and past president of the Inter-University Seminar Armed Forces and Society, Dr. Segal is also a member and past president of the D.C. Sociology Society. He is a member and former chair of the peace and war section of the American Sociological Association and member of the International Sociological Association and the Society for Military Psychology as well.
Honored with multiple awards for his work, Dr. Segal recently received an Alumni Professional Achievement Award from the University of Chicago in 2018, a Julius E. Uhlaner Award from the American Psychological Association in 2015 and an Award for Public Understanding of Sociology from the American Sociological Association in 2008. He has also received career achievement awards from the American Sociological Association, the District of Columbia Sociological Society, and the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces & Society. He also received several honors from the Department of the Army, including a Medal for Outstanding Civilian Service in 1989 and 2000, a Certificate of Achievement in 1976 and a Commendation Award in 1975. He has notably been cited in the 56th through 59th editions of Who's Who in America, as well as the seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education and the 18th edition of Who's Who in the World.
Upon entering college, Dr. Segal did not know what he wanted to study. Eventually discovering sociology after majoring in three other fields, he received a Bachelor of Arts from the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University in 1962 and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1963 and 1967, respectively. He also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Towson University in 1991. Married to Mady Wechsler since 1976, Dr. Segal has one daughter. In retirement, he enjoys reading. He also loves staying active by working out every day.
