CAMBRIDGE, MA, April 09, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Joseph Bower, DBA, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Bower celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Joseph Bower has an unusual record of 56 years teaching and research at Harvard Business School. His early work on resource allocation in large corporations as assistant and associate professor laid the conceptual foundation for new approaches to strategy consulting by leading firms. The book, "Managing the Resource Allocation Process," reporting this work won the McKinsey Foundation Best Book Award in 1973. Subsequent work with his doctoral candidates over 35 years developing what is now known as the strategic process field of research was recognized by his election as one of the founding fellows of the Strategic Management Society. The work is reported in a prize winning volume "From Resource Allocation to Strategy."

Over the course of his teaching career as an expert in leadership, strategy, and organization, Professor Bower has led the development of the general management unit consisting of 40 members of the HBS faculty, as well as initiating The General Management Program for mid-career executives. He also served as HBS Senior Associate Dean and Director of the Doctoral Programs.

Drawing on his experience and research at HBS, Professor Bower served as part of the team that from 1968 to 1973 planned and negotiated with the Soviets and other West European nations the creation of the International Institute of Applied systems analysis, now based just outside Vienna. That work led to close relationships with Harvard faculty building Harvard's new Kennedy School of Government. As a member of that faculty, he participated in building new curriculum in Public Management, gathered in one of the early casebooks in public management.

His research and teaching at HBS and HKS is captured in more than a dozen books and casebooks, dozens of published articles, and more than 200 published case studies. Most notable in addition to those mentioned are a study of leadership in business and government, "Two Faces of Management," a study of CEO succession, "The CEO Within," and "Capitalism at Risk," an analysis of the forces leading toward global crisis and the critical role business must play in resolving the problems facing society. His HBR article with Clayton Christensen, "Disruptive Innovation: Catching the Wave," won the McKinsey Foundation award in 1995.

In parallel and informing his academic work, Professor Bower has served as expert witness in anti-trust cases, a consultant to corporations and the government, and a director of nine corporations. As well, he has served as a trustee of the DeCordova Museum and a life trustee of New England Conservatory of Music, which awarded him an honorary doctor of music in recognition of his many decades of service to the institution.

Commenting on his career Professor Bower noted that at a time when the physical sciences have become increasingly integrated so as to permit insights from separate fields to illuminate more effectively the complexity of living, geologic and astronomic phenomena, the social sciences have fragmented and pursued mathematic models of human, social, and societal processes that are increasingly integrated. "I feel lucky that my mentors at Harvard Business School introduced me early to the complexities of organizational life so that I can learn to study and write about them through the lenses of multiple disciplines, not just the narrow one of micro-economic theory. In turn the most rewarding aspects of my career have been the dozens of doctoral candidates whose careers I have helped build while guiding their doctoral theses, and the many thousands of MBAs and MPPs who have gone on to important careers in business and government. A unique aspect of my career is that I have my AB, MBA and DBA from Harvard and have worked there my whole life. It has given me a chance to have an impact by shaping the work of a great institution. That same longevity has characterized my relationships with all the organizations I have served as consultant, director, and trustee as well as my life with my family: Nancy Bower, my late wife, children Deborah Brodheim and Jonathan Bower, and grandchildren Eliza, Aaron, Adam, Deborah and Max, and especially my new wife Elizabeth Potter."

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Joseph Bower, DBA, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
