Simultaneously, he has served as the president of Future Information Technology since 2000, as well as excelling as an independent consultant in the field since 2002. He began his career as a computer system analyst with Computer Sciences Corporation in Richland, WA from 1967 to 1969, subsequently working as a computer system designer with General Electric in Phoenix, AZ from 1969 to 1970 and a database system designer and an engineering fellow with Honeywell Information Systems, Inc. from 1970 to 1990. Having earned a Bachelor of Science in 1964 and a Master of Arts in 1966 from the University of Arizona, Dr. Friesen obtained his Doctor of Philosophy from Arizona State University in 1982, which led to a position as a research professor of computer science and engineering for the aforementioned university from 1991 to 2001.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Friesen is affiliated with a number of professional organizations including the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Association for Computing Machinery, the Association for Asian Studies, the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians and the International Council on Systems Engineering. He has also been involved in various other career-related endeavors, serving as the director for the eLearning Systems for Arizona Teachers and Students Inc. from 2006 to 2010, a chairman and organizer for the XPRIZE Think Tank Conference from 2015 to 2017 and a member of the International Council on Systems Engineering since 2018, among others. A holder of five United States patents in database technology, Dr. Friesen's creative works include the publication, "China Reporting: An Oral History of American Journalism in the 1930s-1940s," as well as contributions to articles published professional journals.

Prior to his longstanding career as a software engineer, he served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves from 1957 to 1965.
