Dr. Wasfie has been an attending surgeon of general and laparoscopic surgery, trauma and acute care surgery at Michigan State University (MSU) Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, MI, since 1991. He has also been a professor of clinical surgery at MSU in the School of Osteopathic Medicine since 2018. He was formerly an associate professor in 2017. Currently, Dr. Wasfie is focusing his research on the correlation between trauma score and serum myoglobin levels and the impact on acute kidney injury, as well as reducing re-admission rates of acute subdural hematomas and traumatic brain injury in the elderly, study changes in emotional intelligence among the surgical residence, and physician, nurse and patient communications to improve patient satisfaction and outcomes in the community, among other studies.
Becoming involved in medicine because it was challenging for him, Dr. Wasfie wanted a career where he could use both his mind and energy to challenge the existing facts and improve on it. He chose to pursue education because he considers it one of the noblest professions. Dr. Wasfie contributed a chapter in the 2018 textbook "Elderly Care: Options Challenges and Trends." The chapter is titled "Management of Fractured Ribs in the Elderly." He has also contributed articles to various scholarly journals in his area of expertise.
A fellow of the International College of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Wasfie is also a longstanding member of multiple other organizations. He has been a board member of the Genesee County Medical Society since 2000 and a longstanding member of the New York Academy of Science, the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, the Society of American Gastro-Endoscopic Surgery and the Midwestern Surgical Association, among others. Dr. Wasfie currently serves on approximately a dozen different committees, such as the patient satisfaction committee, the post-operative glycemic control committee, surgical quality improvement committee, and the operating room utilization committee.
The co-recipient of a National Institutes of Health grant in 1984, Dr. Wasfie has since been cited in approximately 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Dr. Wasfie completed a Bachelor of Science at Central University in Iraq in 1964 and a Doctor of Medicine at Baghdad Medical School in Iraq in 1970. He became a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Forensic Examiners in 1996. He has held medical licenses in New York and Michigan since 1998, a Teaching for Quality certificate since 2018, and he completed the Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment/ACGME course at MSU in 2018. Upon earning his medical degree, Dr. Wasfie was a registrar at Diwania Hospital in Baghdad from 1970 to 1981 and research associate at Sinai Hospital in Detroit from 1981 to 1985. He then completed postdoctoral work at Columbia University in the division of transplant surgery from 1987 to 1989, as well as residency work in general surgery, oncology and transplant surgery from 1985 and 1991, and was a postdoctoral research scientist between 1987 and 1989. Born in Baghdad, Dr. Wasfie later married his wife Barina Y. Zado. He has two children.
