After earning a Bachelor of Science in finance from Pennsylvania State University in 1960, Mr. Rothermel earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from American University in 1966. A prominent member of his industry, he was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar in 1967. Initially an accountant with Lukens Steel Company, where he worked from 1960 to 1961, Mr. Rothermel has worked with a private practice in Reading, PA. He has also worked for Carpenter Technology Corporation as attorney, resident counsel, general counsel, assistant secretary, secretary and vice president. He is currently chair of Cumru Associates, after having served the company as president and chief executive officer.
Mr. Rothermel has also worked as independent lead director, chair of the executive committee and on the board of directors for Sovereign Bank. Along with his primary positions, he works as independent lead director and chair of the risk committee and chair nominating and corporate governance committee for Customers Bancorp, Inc. Also interested in civic outreach, Mr. Rothermel was a member of Pennsylvania State University's Institute of Community Affairs from 1974 to 1978 and the board of directors for the Berks County chapter of the American Red Cross from 1983 to 1986, among other positions. He is a former church lay leader. He has also served as a member and chairman of the advisory board of Penn State, Berks campus.
Mr. Rothermel became involved with his industry immediate after being released from active duty with the United States Navy in 1966, serving to the rank of Lieutenant. Now celebrating a career that has spanned more than five decades, he is especially proud of his work as an executive officer in a Fortune 500 company, as well as his work in the financial industry. Mr. Rothermel belongs to many organizations in his field, including the American Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar, the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce and the Reading-Berks Chamber of Commerce. He has also belonged to his local rotary club.
