After securing a Bachelor of Arts from New York University in 1966 and a Doctor of Medicine from Stanford University in 1972, he completed an internship and residency in diagnostic radiology with the Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in Bronx, NY between 1972 and 1977. Subsequently, Dr. Kurtz began his career as a professor at Jefferson Medical College in 1977, progressing to the posts of a vice chairman in 1989 and the director of medical student education in 2004, a title he held concurrently with his role as a professor of obstetrics-gynecology until 2009. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Kurtz devotes his time to several different professional organizations including the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasounds, and the American College of Radiology. A member of the board of governors for the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, he was elected as the president of the organization from 2003 to 2005. Similarly, he served as the president of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound from 1991 to 1993. Previously, Dr. Kurtz maintains a relationship with the advisory committee for the Center of Excellence in Biomedical Imaging while holding the title of a medical advisor for the Blue Shield of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, PA.
A testament to his accomplishments in the field, Dr. Kurtz is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. These accolades include the Edward O'Hara Award for excellence in teaching in 1991, the Mary S. Fisher Outstanding Educator Award from the Philadelphia Roentgen Society in 2009, the Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Radiologists in 2011, and the Joseph H. Clinical Pioneer Award from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine in 2017, among others. With a number of notable achievements, Dr. Kurtz led research in ultrasound patterns for the analysis of diffuse liver disease, research in ultrasound evaluations of obstetrical and gynecologic problems including intra-vaginal scanning and cross-sectional imaging for ovarian cancer, and research in ultrasounds to establish an accurate fetal age.
