Dr. Parsons was a tenured otolaryngologist, pediatrician, professor and currently is a missionary surgeon. First serving in the military as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force beginning in 1967, ILT Parsons served in the war in Vietnam from 1969-70 as a Forward Air Controller assigned to the US Army flying the OV-10 Bronco. He was elevated to a combat instructor pilot for the later part of his tour. He instructed combat tactics for the next three years, then attempted to achieve his goal of being an astronaut. However, during medical school he had the fortune of spending time with Astronaut Deke Slayton who convinced him to care for patients rather than fly in space. Years later, as a doubly boarded Pediatrician and Otolaryngolgist with a fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology, he became a Professor and eventually a Third World Missionary.
Dr. Parsons fellowships included Pediatric Head & Neck Surgery at Great Ormond Street in London, UK, Pediatric Facial Plastics at The Children's Hospital in Denver and Pediatric Broncho-Esophagology in Sydney, Australia. Prior to that, he served as the Chief of Pediatrics and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Kirtland AFB, NM, and a Clinical Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at the University of New Mexico and the University of Colorado. Later, while a Colonel in the USAF, he served as a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery (Otolaryngology) for the Universities of Texas-San Antonio, Colorado and the Uniformed Services Health Science Center. After retirement from the military, he was a Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery at the University of Missouri. Eventually, he entered private practice but continued his academia at both the Universities of South and North Carolina from 1998 & 1999.
After completing his fellowships in 1987, Dr. Parsons began serving as a Third World Missionary Surgeon both for the impoverished villagers, and to teach the local surgeons modern surgical techniques at those country's major medical centers. He has served in over a dozen countries on well more than 100 such experiences. The work he accomplished has given him the ability to teach not only modern surgery, but also to engage doctors in conversation about spiritual issues. Dr. Parsons has even hosted over a dozen and a half Vietnamese, Russian, Canadian and Australian doctors in his home for up to three months at a time where they've openly discussed modern surgery and a spiritually focused life and surgical practice.
During his career, Dr. Parsons had the pleasure of serving as a Consultant to the Surgeon General for Head & Neck Surgery. He found further success as the founder and consulting surgeon for TIME for Christ Global Ministries to enhance the healthcare causes in Cuba, Honduras and Romania. Since 1992, he has served on the Board for ComCare International Hearing Aid Ministries and served on the Board for the Christian Society of Otolaryngology.
Contributing well more than 100 articles to scholarly journals and chapters to books, Dr. Parsons notably edited the 1996 book, "Otolaryngologic Clinics of North American" on Pediatric Sinusitis, which sold more non-subscription copies of any "Clinics" in any specialty.
Dr. Parsons is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS). He is an emeritus member of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology and the Society of Ear, Nose and Throat Advances in Children (SENTAC), for which he served as President. Moreover, he was presented with the Humanitarian of the Year by both the AAO-HNS and SENTAC in 2002 and 2006. In 2002, SENTAC award him the Sylvan Stool Award for "Outstanding lifetime contributions in teaching and service for the care of children." In 2017, Global Health & Pharma gave him the Social Care Award for "The United Kingdom's Humanitarian Award for International Medical Aid." In 2011, he was selected as one of America's "Most Compassionate Doctors" by Patient's Choice Magazine. In February 2019, he was chosen as a Marquis Who's Who Humanitarian inductee.
In 2009, for his lifetime humanitarian service and teaching in Vietnam, he was awarded in Hanoi the highest award given by the Vietnamese government. In 2007 he was awarded The HoChiMinh Award for exemplary teaching and service to the Vietnames people. In 2016, he was again recognized and re-awarded by the People's Committee of HoChiMinh. These awards are contrasted by his previous military awards during the war which included three Distinguished Flying Crosses, 13 Airmedals, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Vietnamese Civil Action Honor Medal, first class.
Dr. Parsons has been in most Best Doctors in American since its first edition in 1991. He has previously been honored by Marquis in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in America and Who's Who International. In 2012, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the AAO-HNS.
Dr. Parsons earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Christian University in 1967 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas-Houston in 1977 (with multiple honors including AOA). His pediatric residency was accomplished at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, San Antonio. His otolaryngology residency was accomplished at the University of Colorado. He later graduated from the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (with honors) in 1981.
