Supported by more than four decades of professional excellence in environmental science and academia, Dr. Focht holds the title of professor emeritus at Oklahoma State University, where he has held a number of roles throughout his career. Commencing his tenure as a graduate research assistant in the department of political science in 1988, he subsequently served as instructor in the School of Geology, research fellow and director of the Environmental Institute, and director of the Oklahoma Water Resources Research Institute. He was also an assistant and associate professor in the department of political science and director of the Institute for Sustainable Environments, the Environmental Science Graduate Program, the Certificate Program in Environmental Studies and the Graduate Program in Fire and Emergency Management Administration.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Focht honed his expertise in environmental engineering through varying roles with Underground TV Inspection, Inc., McCullough Associates, Inc., the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Science Applications International Corporation. Additionally, he has served as an expert witness on environmental regulations and instructed various courses and seminars outside the collegiate sector. In a career filled with highlights, he is especially proud of serving on the editorial board of the Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences and obtaining $7.5 million in research funding from federal agencies.
A certified trainer in fire service leadership, Dr. Focht holds a Bachelor of Science in zoology from Ohio University, where he also pursued postgraduate studies in microbiology, a Bachelor of Engineering in civil and environmental engineering from Vanderbilt University, and a Master of Science in political science and Doctor of Philosophy in environmental science from Oklahoma State University. He served as president of the National Institutes for Water Resources, and has been an active member of several other environmental organizations. Utilizing his considerable knowledge, he edited two books on sustainability education and watershed management, in addition to two journal special issues on environmental research and policy. Over the course of his lengthy career, he also authored 11 book chapters, 21 refereed journal articles, seven conference proceedings, five technical reports, hundreds of conference presentations and 28 journal articles in 16 different journals.
In light of his excellence in the field, Dr. Focht earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Bronze Medal, Superior Achievement Certificate and Special Recognition Certificate, the OSU Technology Innovator Award, a number of scholarships and fellowships through Oklahoma State University, and features in the 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, among myriad other accolades. Most recently, he received a Grand Official Diploma (Order of Merit) from the Corps of Military Firefighters of the Federal District of Brazil in 2012.
