For more than 40 years, Dr. Chase has been engaged in scholarship, teaching, and administrative service. He is the author of Workers, Society and the Soviet State: Labor and Life in Moscow, 1918-1929, Enemies Within the Gates? The Comintern and the Stalinist Repression, 1934-1939, and numerous scholarly publications. He was the Co-Director of the Russian Archive Series (1991-2001) and Co-Editor of The Carl Beck Papers in Russian and East European Studies (1982-2017).
Dr. Chase was the Director of the Center of Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies at the University of Pittsburgh in 1989-1991 and 2007, and served as a committee member for that Center from 1979-2017. He also served as the Director of the Urban Studies Program from 2011 to 2018, and as the Chair of the History Department in 2002-2006 and 2009. He served on various other University and professional committees, including being a member of the Advisory Board for the University's Honor College Additionally, he was active as a professor of history from 2000 to 2018, associate professor from 1985 to 2000, and assistant professor from 1979 to 1985. Earlier in his career, Dr. Chase was an instructor at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, from 1976 to 1979.
Dr. Chase began his career as a student at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1969. He pursued his graduate studies at Boston College, where he completed a Master of Arts in Russian Studies in 1973 and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Russian and Modern European history in 1979.
Throughout his career, Dr. Chase has been recognized for his contributions. He is a grantee of the Social Science Research Council, the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the International Research & Exchanges Board, the National Council for Soviet and East European Research, the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies, the United States Department of Education, and the Hewlett Foundation of the University of Pittsburgh, among others. In addition, Dr. Chase has been a fellow of the Harriman Institute, Columbia University and the recipient of University teaching awards.
