Mr. Ben-Asher began his education as a student at Livingston High School in New Jersey. He was co-editor-in-chief of the award winning school newspaper "The Lance" and was awarded a diploma in 1964. Mr. Ben-Asher continued his studies at Rutgers College in New Brunswick, NJ, completing a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. Following this achievement, he concluded his academic efforts at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, earning a Master of Arts in 1970.
With 34 years of professional experience, Mr. Ben-Asher is currently retired, having most recently been active as a freelance photojournalist mainly for the Times of Trenton from 2005 to 2007. Prior to obtaining this position, he was a senior research analyst with the Office of Legislative Services (OLS) of the New Jersey State Legislature from 1999 to 2003. From 1987 to 1998, he was a senior research associate with the OLS, having been a research associate from 1976 to 1987 and a research assistant from 1971 to 1976. Earlier in his career, Mr. Ben-Asher was the plant personnel administrator of the Tanatex Chemical Co. division of the Sybron Corp. from 1970 to 1971.
A respected voice in his areas of expertise, Mr. Ben-Asher has been an active leader in his community. He was a member of the Politics and Government Judges Panel for the Best in America Special Edition of U.S. News and World Report, and he served as the staff member of the New Jersey Tobacco Age-of-Sale Enforcement Task Force. Mr. Ben-Asher also represented the OLS as the nonpartisan staff member to the New Jersey Assembly Labor Committee, the Assembly Commerce and Industry Committee, the Assembly Drug and Alcohol Abuse Policy Committee, the Assembly Housing Committee, and the Public Employer-Employee Relations Study Commission in the New Jersey Legislature. He spent his last 20 years at the OLS with the Law and Public Safety Section known for its integrity and professionalism. In that capacity, he researched and wrote legislation ranging from New Jersey's first seat belt law to its Lemon Law and the Graduated Driver License Law which was cited by AAA as a national model for minimizing crashes and injuries involving young people.
Throughout his career Mr. Ben-Asher has been recognized for his achievements. He was awarded the Podmore-Dwyer Historic Award from Lawrence Township primarily for his role as the Editor and Photographer of Lawrenceville's first historic landmarks guide, the latest edition of which was published in 2009 and catalogued by the Library of Congress. The Rutgers Alumni Association presented him with the Extraordinary Service to Alma Mater Loyal Son Award in 1995 partly because of his Chairmanship of The Mason Gross (Presidential) Memorial on the New Brunswick campus.
