Earlier in her career, she was a partner of the Law Office of Lee & Hui from 1979 to 1988, partner of the Law Office of Lau & Lee from 1977 to 1979, associate of Hardesty & Lau from 1973 to 1977, and intern at ACLU in 1973. Before establishing herself professionally, Ms. Hui invested her time and efforts into her education. First, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College in 1967. Thereafter, she attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she achieved a Master of Social Work in 1970, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1974. In 1975, she became a member of the California Bar Association, where she later became a certified specialist in immigration and nationality law and served as a commissioner of the immigration law advisory commission. To remain at the top of her field, Ms. Hui has been tremendously involved in her professional community. She is a board member of the Chinese Culture Foundation of San Francisco, member of the Queen's Bench Bar Association of San Francisco, former president of the Northern California chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, and member of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area.
Ms. Hui is a first generation immigrant, so her continued drive to help her clients is ever present and personal to her. In recognition of her professional excellence in her career, she has been distinguished as a SuperLawyer every year since 2005.
