Penning approximately 50 articles over the years, Dr. Thomas J. Schriber also authored several monographs, chapters for books and four of his own books
ANN ARBOR, MI, April 15, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Thomas J. Schriber, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Schriber celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Thomas J. Schriber, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Technology and Operations at the University of Michigan (UM), has been recognized by Marquis Who's Who for dedication and achievements in the field of computer applications.
A professor emeritus since 2016, Dr. Schriber taught technology and operations at the UM for 50 years prior to retirement. (Post-Ph.D. and prior to joining the UM faculty in 1966, Dr. Schriber was an assistant professor at Eastern Michigan University, where he introduced computing courses and founded and directed an academic computer center.) After joining the UM faculty, he was also the founder and instructor for the Simulation Using General Purpose Simulation course in the UM engineering summer conferences from 1969 to 1992, and as the founder and director of the UM Business Faculty Summer Programs in Computing from 1969 to 1973, funded by IBM and endorsed by the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business. These courses, taken by more than 300 Business School faculty from around the country, resulted in fundamental publications entitled "FORTRAN Applications in Business Administration," Volumes I, II, and III, which were donated to the libraries of circa 500 accredited Business Schools in the United States. Dr. Schriber was also a member of the U.S.-USSR Joint Science and Technology Exchange Agreement from 1977 to 1980, traveling to various parts of the USSR for several weeks with the other five exchange agreement members and then later hosting a group of USSR visitors at the University of Michigan. Over the years, Dr. Schriber has also been a visiting scholar at the University of Singapore, the Swiss Federal Technical University, and Stanford University.
Dr. Schriber's major area of interest has been discrete-event simulation, which is a methodology for building computer-based models of systems and then conducting experiments with the models to make inferences about the behavior of these systems. Within this broad arena, his activities have included the logical foundations of simulation software, the implementation of variance-reduction techniques in the design of models, simulation applications in the design and control of manufacturing and transportation systems, automation of output analysis, and automatic model generation. Penning approximately 50 articles over the years, Dr. Schriber also authored several monographs, chapters for books and four of his own books: "Fundamentals of Flowcharting" in 1969, "FORTRAN Case Studies for Business Applications" in 1970, "Simulation Using GPSS" in 1974 (published in Russian in 1980), and "An Introduction to Simulation Using GPSS/H" in 1991. "Simulation Using GPSS" remained in publication for almost 20 years.
Dr. Schriber has been involved for 50 years with the annual Winter Simulation Conference, the major annual conference devoted to the area of discrete-event simulation. The WSC started in 1966 and after an eventual one-year lapse, celebrated its 50-year anniversary in 2018. On the academic side, he gave papers at the majority of those WSCs. On the administrative side, Dr. Schriber was Program Chair of the 1976 Bicentennial Winter Simulation Conference and co-editor of its printed proceedings. He was a member of the WSC Board of Directors from 1978-86, chairing the board in 1982. He was also a member of the WSC Foundation from 2003-09, chairing the board in 2007-08.
He has been involved with various firms over the years in various capacities, including Ford, General Motors, Monsanto, and the Wolverine Software Corporation. He held the position of associate editor for several professional journals such as Simulation, the International Journal of Flexible Manufacturing Systems, and Decision Sciences, and was a guest co-editor for an issue of the Annals of Operations Research.
A member and Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute, Dr. Schriber is also a member of the European Simulation Society (ASIM), the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
The recipient of a 2013 Pioneer of Simulation designation in the Computer Simulation Archive at North Carolina State University (video interview at https://d.lib.ncsu.edu/computer-simulation/), Dr. Schriber had previously been given a Titan of Simulation Award at the Winter Simulation Conference in 2009 and a Landmark Paper Award at the WSC's 40th Anniversary in 2007. In 2007 he received the WSC Board of Directors Award for Distinguished Service. He was also given a Lifetime Professional Achievement Award in 2001 by the INFORMS College of Simulation.
As a student Dr. Schriber obtained a Bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame in 1957. He then entered the University of Michigan for graduate studies as a National Science Foundation Fellow, earning a Master of Science in engineering (1958), a Master of Arts in mathematics (1959) and a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering (1964). He was selected for inclusion in several professional publications in honor of his accomplishments, including American Men and Women of Science, Leading Consultants in Computer Software and Leading Consultants in Technology. Dr. Schriber has also been featured in several editions of Marquis Who's Who in America.
In recognition of his contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Thomas J. Schriber, PhD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
