He has also directed the Center for Dynamic Magneto Optics at the university since 2014. Prior to this, he served the university as an associate professor in the division of applied physics from 1987 to 1997, having previously been a senior member of the technical staff at Hughes Research Laboratory in Malibu, California, from 1982 to 1987. Dr. Rand commenced his career as a research associate in the department of physics at Stanford University in Stanford, California, in 1980, holding the role for two years.
Dr. Rand has held a Bachelor of Science from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, since 1972 and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Toronto in Canada since 1978. He then served in a World Trade Postdoctoral Fellowship at IBM in San Jose, California, from 1978 to 1980. A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, he was formerly an invited professor at the French National Center for Scientific Research in Grenoble, France in 1988 and visiting professor at the Collège de France in Paris in 1995.
Dr. Rand is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Most renowned for inventing the diamond laser, Dr. Rand also holds several patents in the field of optical science.
In light of his many accomplishments, Dr. Rand was elected a fellow of the Optical Society, where he previously served as a topical editor, the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom and the American Physical Society. He was also a Fulbright Fellow of the École Normale Supérieure in France in 1995, an Erskine Fellow of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand in 2014, and a distinguished speaker at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 2014. Dr. Rand was selected for inclusion in the second edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, which was published in 1993.
