Amassing nearly 40 years of practiced experience in medicine and academia, Dr. Montgomery has been designated as a professor emeritus at the University of Alabama School of Medicine's Huntsville Campus since 1997, having worked for this academic establishment as a professor from 1975 to 1997 and as the chief of the pediatrics program from 1975 to 1995. Prior to these appointments, he excelled as an assistant and an associate professor of pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, lX, between 1966 and 1975. Alongside his primary responsibilities, Dr. Montgomery contributed to the board of directors of the State Board of Health with the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and the advisory committee of Alabama EMS for Children.

Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Montgomery pursued formal education at the University of Alabama, earning a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine in 1955 and 1958, respectively. Thereafter, he furthered his medical training through an internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Mississippi between 1958 and 1960. Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics., Dr. Montgomery also served at the Baylor College of Medicine as a resident in pediatrics from 1960 to 1961 and a fellow in pediatric infectious diseases and immunology from 1964 to 1966.

Previously, Dr. Montgomery enlisted in the United States Army, completing his service in Korea from 1961 to 1962. In 1999, he retired from the United States Army Reserve, having attained the rank of Colonel and receiving the prestigious 9A Proficiency Designator. The 9A Designator is given by the Anny Surgeon General and identifies the top I percent of the service members of the Army's Medical Department. A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals and books in his areas of expertise, he has attained affiliation with several organizations in an effort to remain aware of developments in his field, including the Society for Pediatrics Research, the American Association of Immunologists, the Infectious Diseases Society and the New York Academy of Sciences. The former president of the Alabama chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Montgomery is also a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, Phi Beta Kappa Society, and NESA (National Eagle Scout Association).

Renowned for assisting in the implementation of a germ-free environmental bubble to protect a patient with no natural immunity, Dr. Montgomery's participation with colleagues Mary Ann South, MD and Raphael Wilson, PhD in this treatment became the subject of the movie "The Boy in the Plastic Bubble" and the PBS "American Experience Series" documentary titled "The Boy in the Bubble." He cites the experience assisting with the management isolation apparatus and the care of David Vetter to be the absolute highlight of his career.
