With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Gitler has been an attending cardiologist and chief of cardiology at Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital since 2013, and a partner in Montefiore Westchester Heart Specialists since 2012. In addition to his primary roles, he was an attending cardiologist with Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester from 1981 to 2013, where he also served as director of the cardiology fellowship program and Chest Pain Center from 2005 to 2013, chief of cardiology from 2002 to 2013 and president of the medical board and medical staff from 1995 to 1998. Dr. Gitler has also held a number of academic positions with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, including advancing from instructor to associate professor of clinical medicine, a position he currently holds. He was formerly an assistant professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University from 1992 to 2013.
Dr. Gitler began his career as a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he obtained Bachelors of Science in chemistry and in life sciences in 1972. He then attended Weill-Cornell Medical College, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1976. From 1976 to 1979, he completed a medical residency at Jacobi Medical Center, and he was a cardiology fellow and chief fellow with Montefiore Medical Center from 1979 to 1981. Dr. Gitler is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners; the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Advanced Heart Failure; the National Board of Echocardiography; and the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology.
A respected leader in his community, Dr. Gitler has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, and the American College of Chest Physicians. He has also been active with the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the New York Cardiological Society, the American Society of Echocardiography, the Heart Failure Society of America, the New York State Medical Society, the Westchester County Medical Society, the American Federation for Medical Research, the American Medical Athletic Association, and the AMA (American Medical Association). His honorary associations include Mensa International, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Lambda Upsilon. He has published numerous articles in cardiology journals. Dr. Gitler has been involved with numerous cardiology clinical research trials from 1985 to 2011. He was president of the American Heart Association Board of Directors of the Westchester/Putnam region from 2008 to 2011.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Gitler has accrued several accolades. He is a fellow of seven organizations, including the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, the American Society of Echocardiography, and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. He was honored with the Attending of the Year Award by the Montefiore Hospital Medical House Staff in 1985 and Teacher of the Year Award from New Rochelle Hospital and Medical Center in 1986. More recently, he was presented with the New Rochelle Hospital William C. Schraft Jr. Memorial Teaching Award in 1996 and the Sound Shore Medical Center Robert D. Brandstetter Memorial Teaching Award in 2006. He received the American College of Physicians Community-Based Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004.
Married to Ellen S. Gitler, M.D. since 1974, Dr. Gitler is the proud father of three children. He enjoyed practicing karate and marathon running in his spare time and has a black belt in Okinawan Goju Ryu karate and has completed 10 marathons. He is a charter member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
