After accruing four decades of professional excellence, Dr. Shellhammer retired from his role as a professor of biology at San Jose State University. Over the years, he had found success as a senior associate with Bay H.T. Harvey & Associates, an ecology expert for the National Park Service, and the co-director of research on the biological effects of off-road vehicles at San Jose State University. At the beginning of his career, Dr. Shellhammer was enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the Chemical Corps for six months on active duty and nearly eight years in the Chemical units of the United States Army Reserve.
Dr. Shellhammer is the primary authority on the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys raviventris). He co-authored the first recovery plan for the species and successfully nominated the salt marsh harvest mouse to be declared endangered in 1970. He carried out work on the cytotaxonomy, ecology, and distribution of the mouse for over 40 years. He has also overseen over 150 salt marsh harvest mouse projects and trained dozens of students and staff on the techniques for handling and identifying this species. His other major area of long-term research is the fire ecology of giant sequoias (Sequiadendron giganteum), a project that he has continued periodically since 1964.
An expert in his field, Dr. Shellhammer earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in zoology from the University of California, Davis. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he is affiliated with the American Society of Mammalogists and the California Academy of Sciences.
For his professional accomplishments, he was selected for inclusion in the 12th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 66th edition of Who's Who in America.
