Ms. Shelton, a longtime private piano teacher in Muskogee, OK, since 1976, recently retired as a full-time music assistant with the First Baptist Church in Muskogee in 2018 after 36 years. She also spent 42 impressive years as an organist for the church between 1976 and 2018. Ms. Shelton spent one year as a choral and string teacher in the Muskogee Public Schools during 1970 and two years as a teaching fellow of piano at the Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, TX, during 1973.
A member, former vice president of auditions and honorary member of the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association, Ms. Shelton also served as an audition judge for the organization. She was a judge for the Area Baptist Keyboard Festival for some time as well. Furthermore, Ms. Shelton is a longstanding member of the Music Teachers National Association and the National Guild of Piano Teachers.
Named Teacher of the Year by the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association in 2009, Ms. Shelton has also since received an Oklahoma Baptist University Profile in Excellence Award in 2011. She has been cited in the 23rd and 24th editions of Who's Who of American Women.
Ms. Shelton has held a Bachelor of Arts in music education from Oklahoma Baptist University since 1970 and a Master of Music in church music and Master of Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary since 1974. Born in Greenville, MI, Ms. Shelton is the daughter of James Thomas and Ruth Almira Shelton. In her free time, two of her favorite hobbies include scrapbooking and ceramics.
