He earned a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude from the City University of New York in 1963. That same year, he received the Jonas E. Salk Scholarship to medical school, awarded to a select number of high achieving New York City pre-medical students for their education at a New York City medical school. He received his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1967. At NYU he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the honor medical society, and also received the Solomon and Dora Monness Shapiro Prize for general excellence based on scholarship, personality and character.
Dr. Proper began his career at Bellevue and University Hospitals where he served his internship and first year residency in 1967 and 1968. Subsequently he served as a second year resident at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, FL (1969-70) and as a first year fellow in cardiology at Mount Sinai Hospital, Miami (1970-71). From 1971-1973, Dr. Proper served as an internist in the United States Air Force with the rank of major. He completed his fellowship in cardiology at Yale-New Haven Hospital from 1973-1974. He entered private practice in 1975, serving on the staff of Cooper Hospital until 1994 and Marlton Hospital (now Virtua Hospital System) to date. Throughout most of his Cardiology career, Dr. Proper has been on the staffs of Our Lady of Lourdes, Virtua, and Woodbury Hospitals. Although still affiliated with the hospitals, during the past 10 years he has limited his practice to an office setting.
In his spare time, Dr. Proper enjoys reading, jogging, cooking, sports and spending many hours with his family, which now includes four grandchildren.
