As an innovator, intrapreneur and executive, Dr. Grauer lead disruptive change at Barclays Plc, Wells Fargo & Company and Merrill Lynch, ultimately building the largest institutional asset manager in the world, Barclays Global Investors (BGI), subsequently acquired by BlackRock.
Under his leadership, program and transition trading, crossing, target date, exchange traded and smart beta funds, among others, were incubated and then scaled into industry leading technologies and products. As Chairman and CEO of BGI and its predecessors and member of the Barclays Plc Management Committee, he built and led one of the first globally integrated asset managers.
As an entrepreneur and venture capitalist, Dr. Grauer was a general partner at Angel Investors LP, and the first professional, exclusively seed-stage venture fund designed to replicate start-up deal flow in Silicon Valley. Both funds were top quartile performers in their respective vintages.
As an academic, Dr. Grauer taught Finance at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Columbia University, where he founded the Center for the Study of Futures Markets. He has a Ph.D. in Business from Stanford University, M.A. in Economics from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. (Honours) in Economics from the University of British Columbia.
His publications include 52 Atherton (Self-published), Discussion in Administrative Aspects of Investment-Based Social Security Reform (ed. John Shoven, NBER), The Future of Investment Strategy (in Japanese, eds. Kasuhiro Okamoto and Frederick L.A. His not-for-profit activities are focused on education and have included board service and leadership at Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, Middlebury Institute for International Studies and Menlo School.
