Backed by 50 years of practiced legal experience, Mr. Baskin currently serves as the president of Baskin Law Firm, where he specializes in family and entertainment law. He holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Wayne State University. Early in his career, Mr. Baskin was law clerk to the Honorable Clifford O'Sullivan in the Southern Division of the U.S. Federal Court. He served as a police officer and adjunct professor in law and taught chemistry on an ad hoc basis.
As his firm started to grow and Motown was establishing its roots in the region (Metro Detroit was then the 10th largest television market for viewers), Mr. Baskin expanded his practice into entertainment and divorce law. In his practice, he has represented judges, doctors, lawyers and CEOs. He also negotiated broadcasting rights for the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Tigers. In addition, aside from many individuals involved in the fields of sports, media, and entertainment in the Detroit market, he represented Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Barbara Streisand, and others of note. He was a founder of Michigan Divorce Lawyers, and received a lifetime achievement award from the Michigan Divorce Lawyers section.
Through his work with television and radio stars, Mr. Baskin established a local television program called "Due Process," which features expert lawyers and respected public figures who share their views and offer advice regarding the latest legal issues both locally and nationally. Additionally, he has hosted local programs for WXYZ, WDIV and WJBK. In order to remain aware of changes in entertainment law, Mr. Baskin is affiliated with the Michigan branch of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, where he is one of the founding members.
Mr. Baskin authored the Michigan Child Custody Act, was the director of the ACLU Child Custody Committee, and authored Michigan's unique personal protection order legislation to assist victims of domestic violence. For his accomplishments, Mr. Baskin was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the State Bar of Michigan, and an honorary doctorate from Central Michigan University. He has been further celebrated by Lawyer's Weekly, Best Lawyers, and the U.S. Department of Justice. Likewise, Mr. Baskin obtained an Emmy Award for his exemplary work on "Due Process."
During his spare time, Mr. Baskin contributes to his family foundation and is able to assist in children's charities such as the HAVEN Shelter for Domestic Violence in Oakland County, MI. Moreover, he has excelled as the president of the Oakland County Bar Association, member and chairman of the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission, and 16-year board chairman of Oakland University.
