William J. Reinke's new memoir, A Hoosier Trial Lawyer's Notebook: Forty Years at the Bar in Indiana, covers a wide range of issues and stories and is to be published in the spring of 2019.

William J. Reinke graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1955. He then served two years as a Sergeant in the Management Planning Unit of "the Machine Records Division" (now called "computers") at Fifth Army Headquarters in Chicago, so he was not only present at the dawn of the computer age, he actually participated in its birth. Back in 1955, what are now known as computers consisted of simple IBM machines. They were fed IBM punch cards which contained written daily morning report information from every company-sized unit in the U.S. Army's Fifth Division, which included Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa.
The day after his April 4, 1957 honorable discharge, WJR joined the firm he would stay with for four decades. In the course of those forty years, he helped build the nationally recognized Barnes & Thornburg law firm initially headquartered in the two Hoosier cities of South Bend and Indianapolis. While using his own practice of trial work, he helped develop that law partnership into one of the hundred largest law firms in America today, with offices coast to coast from Los Angeles in California to Dover, MD, and Washington, D.C. on the east coast, and from Minneapolis in the north to Atlanta in the south.
A member of the American Bar Association, Mr. Reinke holds a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Wabash College and a J.D. (Juris Doctorate) degree, earned through use of a full-tuition national scholarship at the University of Chicago Law School.
To be published in the spring of 2019, his new memoir, A Hoosier Trial Lawyer's Notebook: Forty Years at the Bar in Indiana, covers a wide range of issues and stories from the world of plaintiffs, defendants, juries, and judges, both effective and ineffective, takes its reader inside the old courthouse in South Bend and a score of other courthouses to get a look at how witnesses are prepared for testimony, how legal research is done, even how an effective trial lawyer decides on the placement of the chairs.
With wry humor and sharp historical perspective, this expert in his field cuts through obfuscation and puffery to show the legal world as he experienced it: famous cases like the Ford Pinto, Sponge (Inside the Patient) and several national bank cases, sparring matches with an indifferent judge, and strategies and tools a winning attorney uses to win judgments.
Probably most memorable from a human standpoint were his cases representing unknown Hoosiers: the farmers, teachers and small-town salesmen of his home area in northern Indiana. Bill Reinke became an advocate who understood and cared about average people and devoted himself to presenting their cases and finding justice when nobody else seemed to care.
In a career filled with highlights, he is especially proud of a trial involving "inverse condemnation," the first of its kind to be filed in Indiana. He represented a client whose neighbor's land was taken by the State and the remaining streets were rerouted in such manner that his client's backyard became his front yard. The client attempted to get money from the State for this unwanted taking, and when refused, WJR filed and successfully tried a lawsuit against Indiana.
