Utilizing a desire to help make the world a better place, particularly for disadvantaged communities, Ms. Whittemore began her career as a teacher for Cleveland Public Schools from 1969 to 1971. Deciding instead to aid her community in terms of economic development, she changed the direction of her career and worked as an urban lending officer for Hyde Park Bank & Trust from 1973 to 1975 and a project development officer for the BILD Corporation from 1975 to 1977. Subsequently, Ms. Whittemore served as the assistant to the executive director of the Downriver Community Conference from 1977 to 1985, the deputy director of the Downriver Community Conference from 1985 to 1987, and an investment officer for MBW Management in 1985.
Soon thereafter, Ms. Whittemore excelled as the deputy director of the business development division of Wayne County in Detroit, MI, from 1987 to 2003, also holding the position of the executive director of the Metropolitan Growth & Development Corporation from 1988 to 2003 and the Economic Development Corporation of Wayne County from 1995 to 2003. During this time, she found success as the executive director of Wayne County Brownfield Authority from 1997 to 2003. Alongside her primary career endeavors, Ms. Whittemore has been volunteering as a tutor since 2003 and has maintained involvement as a secretary for the Forestbrook-Pebblebrook Association since 2017.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Whittemore was appointed as the first vice president and a member of the board of directors for Out Wayne County Human Services. She was additionally associated with the Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference, the Northwest Guidance Clinic and Northern Initiatives. Previously, Ms. Whittemore is active as a trustee and elder of Kirk in the Hills.
Prior to embarking upon her professional path, Ms. Whittemore earned a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University and a Master of Social Work from the University of Illinois, where she was recognized as a fellow. She notably accepted the Wayne County Executive Meritorious Individual Award in 2000 and Wayne County Excellence Award in 2003. Notably, Ms. Whittemore was honored as the Senior Volunteer of the Year by Farmington Public Schools in 2013.
