Mr. Monaghan graduated from Holyoke Community College in 1953, earning an Associate of Arts. He later obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts and a Bachelor of Laws from Yale Law School. He concluded his studies with a Master of Laws from the Harvard Law School.
Mr. Monaghan has been a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1986. He was awarded the Columbia Law School Medal of Excellence in 2010, and was co-recipient of the first Daniel Meltzer Federal Courts Award in 2017. In 2015, he was the Tenth Annual Scarpa Conference Honoree.
