Currently a professor emeritus of the department of anatomy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Dr. Yew first joined the university as a lecturer in anatomy in 1974. Progressing to senior lecturer in 1981 and reader in 1991, he became a full professor of anatomy in 1999 and chaired the department of anatomy from 1999 to 2007. Earlier in his career, Dr. Yew also spent time as a lecturer at the University of Hong Kong from 1976 to 1980 and as a research associate at Wayne State University in Detroit in 1974.
Traveling all over China as a visiting professor, Dr. Yew has taught at such institutions as the Fourth Military Medical University, the Peking University Health Science Center, the Southern Medical University, Jinan University and the Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences. Teaching at several other universities as well, he has served as a visiting scientist at the Hubrecht Institute in the Netherlands and is recognized as a distinguished neuroanatomist, clinical anatomist and toxicology.
Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Yew has authored more than 300 articles in various scholarly journals and has served in an editorial capacity for over 10 professional journals as well. He authored his first book in 1986, titled "A Laboratory Manual of Neuroanatomy," followed by "Basic Neuroanatomy" in 1996. Dr. Yew also edited "Vision: Structure and Function" in 1988, "Human Prenatal Brain Development" in 1993 and the Handbook on the Applied Anatomy of Acupuncture Points in 2002. He is also editor of the book entitled "Ketamine, Use and Abuse" in 2015.
For excellence in his career, Dr. Yew has been the recipient of a number of honors and accolades over the years. Notably, he was elected as fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, the Royal Society of Public Health, the American Association of Anatomists and the Anatomical Society (UK). In light of all his accomplishments, Dr. Yew has previously been cited more than a dozen editions of Who's Who in Asia, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Yew received a Bachelor of Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1969. Following this accomplishment, he continued his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy from Wayne State University in 1974. Concluding his studies at the University of Rostock in Germany, he obtained a Doctor of Science in Medicine in 1988 and a habilitation in medicine in 1995. Thoroughly enjoying his retirement, Dr. Yew spends his time playing tennis, collecting antiques and doing part-time research.
