Joan R. Leitzel, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Joan R. Leitzel is a professor emeritus and retired academic administrator who spent 41 years in academia.

Dr. Leitzel is a professor emeritus and retired academic administrator who spent 41 years in academia. Retiring in 2002, she served six years as the president of the University of New Hampshire. She held the roles of professor in the department of mathematics and statistics, senior vice chancellor for academy affairs and interim chancellor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln between 1992 and 1996. Dr. Leitzel was also an assistant, associate and full professor of mathematics, vice chair of the mathematics department, acting chair and associate provost for curriculum and instruction at the Ohio State University between 1965 and 1990. Prior to her tenure at the Ohio State University, she spent one year as an instructor of mathematics at Oberlin College in Ohio. Dr. Leitzel spent two years as a division director for the National Science Foundation between 1990 and 1992.

Throughout her extensive career in education, Dr. Leitzel was active on numerous boards and committees. She notably served on the executive council committee on academy affairs, on the board of directors and as chair of the committee on faculty for the NASULGC (now the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities) between 1994 and 1996. She was a trustee for the Consortium on Mathematics and its Applications from 1994 to 1995 and was on the board of directors, chair-elect and chair of the American Association of Higher Education between 1996 and 1998. Dr. Leitzel was also involved in various roles with the Mathematical Sciences Education Board, the National Research Council, among others, was a longtime presenter in her field, and a consultant for the Ohio Department of Education and the National Commission on Excellence in Education of the U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. Leitzel is a longtime member who served in various capacities with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Mathematical Society, the Association for Women in Mathematics and the Mathematical Association of America. She is also a longtime member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mortar Board and several honor societies. Locally, Dr. Leitzel was on the board of directors for the United Way of Lincoln in Nebraska, the First Plymouth Church, the Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development, the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and the Durham Community Church.

A two-time grantee recipient from the National Science Foundation beginning in 1976 and again in 1984, Dr. Leitzel also received grants from the Battelle Foundation and Standard Oil of Ohio. She received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Hanover College in 1986, a Director's Award for Management Excellence from the National Science Foundation in 1991, Distinguished Teaching Award in 1982 and a Distinguished Service Award in 2002 from the Ohio State University, and a Pettee Medal from the University of New Hampshire in 2002. She has been featured in close to 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of American Women.

First acquiring a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and English from Hanover College in 1958, Dr. Leitzel soon after received a Master of Arts in mathematics from Brown University in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics from Indiana University in 1965. She was married to Dr. James R.C. Leitzel who died in 1998. She has two sons and four grandchildren.
