In the early-1970s, Dr. Owens completed his active duty service as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves while holding a post-doctoral position as a research associate in the high energy physics group at Case Western Reserve University. A second post-doctoral position at Florida State University led to a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor. This was followed by promotions to Associate Professor and then Professor with tenure. Leadership positions included serving as the Associate Chairman and then Chairman of the Physics Department, as well as an Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Having developed an interest in physics at an early age he was introduced to the field of high energy physics at a National Science Foundation program at Cornell University while in high school. This led to a research career focused on theoretical high-energy physics including applications of perturbative quantum chromodynamics to describe measurements made at high energy particle physics accelerators.
An expert in his field, Dr. Owens earned a Bachelor of Science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a Doctor of Philosophy from Tufts University. Utilizing his expertise, Dr. Owens has authored a number of articles published in refereed professional journals on the topic of theoretical high-energy physics, given and published numerous conference presentations, and has edited the proceedings of several conferences.
Due to his excellence in the field, Dr. Owens was recognized as an Outstanding Junior Investigator by the U.S. Department of Energy. Additionally, he has been presented with the Developing Scholar Award, the Distinguished Research Professor Award, The President's Continuing Education Award, and a University Teaching Award from Florida State University, and he is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
